Atlassian Makes Significant Acquisition in Developer Productivity

Atlassian, a leading provider of productivity software, has announced its largest acquisition to date, focused on enhancing its offerings for software developers.

The company revealed on Thursday an agreement to acquire DX, a developer productivity insights platform, for $1 billion. This deal will be executed through a combination of cash and restricted stock.

The Origins of DX

Founded five years ago by Abi Noda and Greyson Junggren, DX provides enterprises with the ability to analyze the efficiency of their engineering teams.

In a 2022 interview with TechCrunch, Noda explained the impetus behind the company’s creation. He sought a more comprehensive method for understanding the challenges faced by engineering teams.

Noda previously felt that the metrics utilized during his time as a product manager at GitHub were insufficient in providing a complete picture.

He aimed to develop a solution that wouldn’t create a sense of surveillance among developers, but rather offer genuine insights into their workflows.

“Teams often lacked awareness of their own issues, and leadership needed better visibility,” Noda stated to TechCrunch.

Rapid Growth and Customer Base

DX emerged from stealth mode in 2022 and has experienced substantial growth, tripling its customer base annually.

Currently, the company serves over 350 enterprise clients, including prominent organizations such as ADP, Adyen, and GitHub.

Notably, DX achieved this expansion with less than $5 million in venture funding.

Atlassian’s Strategic Decision

Mike Cannon-Brookes, co-founder and CEO of Atlassian, shared that the company spent three years attempting to build a similar developer productivity tool internally.

Ultimately, Atlassian determined that acquiring an existing solution was the more pragmatic approach.

DX proved to be a natural fit, as 90% of its customers were already utilizing Atlassian’s project management and collaboration tools.

The Value Proposition of DX

Cannon-Brookes emphasized DX’s ability to synthesize both qualitative and quantitative data related to developer productivity.

This insight translates into actionable improvements for companies, alongside valuable comparisons to industry peers and organizations of similar size.

He also highlighted the opportune timing of the acquisition, coinciding with the increasing adoption of AI tools and the need to assess their impact.

“Companies are seeking to understand whether increased budgets for AI are yielding positive results and if resources are being allocated effectively,” Cannon-Brookes explained.

Cultural Alignment and Shared Values

Beyond strategic alignment, Cannon-Brookes noted a strong cultural compatibility between the two companies.

He expressed a long-standing appreciation for entrepreneurs based in Utah – where DX is headquartered in Salt Lake City.

Both Atlassian and DX have demonstrated a capacity for significant growth while maintaining a relatively conservative approach to external funding.

Mutual Enthusiasm for the Acquisition

Abi Noda echoed this sentiment, stating that DX and Atlassian are stronger together.

He believes that DX’s data and insights complement Atlassian’s existing suite of tools.

“We can provide customers with a complete cycle – identifying areas for improvement and then leveraging Atlassian’s solutions to address those bottlenecks,” Noda said.

Integration and Future Plans

DX’s platform will be seamlessly integrated into Atlassian’s broader product ecosystem.

This acquisition marks Atlassian’s second this month, following the earlier announcement of the purchase of AI-browser developer, The Browser Company in early September.

Key benefits of the acquisition include:

  • Enhanced developer productivity insights
  • Integration with existing Atlassian tools
  • Improved resource allocation and ROI measurement
