Speedscale Secures $2.2M to Expand API Test Automation

Speedscale, an API test automation firm headquartered in Atlanta, secured its initial $2.2 million in funding just weeks following its presentation at the Y Combinator demo day.

The company was established by Ken Ahrens, Matthew LeRay, and Nate Lee, experienced developers and graduates of the Georgia Institute of Technology. The three founders had a pre-existing relationship spanning approximately two decades before deciding to collaborate professionally.

Their collective experience in DevOps and monitoring roles revealed a significant challenge faced by many modern programmers: ensuring that updates to API integrations within containerized environments do not cause disruptions to applications or services.

“Our focus was on resolving incidents and outages that led to downtime,” explained Lee. “Maintaining quality across these numerous connection points between applications is difficult, and the number of these connections is increasing with the growing use of APIs and containers. We asked ourselves, ‘How can we address this issue and enable companies to maintain rapid release cycles through scalable automation?’ ”

Traditionally, companies implement code updates gradually or within testing environments to prevent potential issues. Speedscale offers a test automation solution that utilizes actual traffic data, allowing developers to expedite the release process.

“Developers aim for frequent updates,” Ahrens noted, discussing the software development lifecycle. “While most changes are beneficial, occasional updates can introduce system failures. Currently, the standard practice is to identify and quickly repair these issues after they occur.”

Speedscale’s core offering provides developers with the capability to identify potential problems before releasing updates. They automate the setup of staging environments, the creation of automated test suites, and the orchestration needed to establish these environments.

“The increasing adoption of Kubernetes highlighted a key issue: while it empowers engineering leaders to grant developers greater independence, there hasn’t been a robust solution for validating these changes. I believe Speedscale is well-positioned to address this challenge,” stated a company representative.

The Atlanta-based startup, a recent graduate of the Y Combinator program, is presently conducting a closed alpha test with a select group of pilot partners, as indicated by LeRay. Having been founded only nine months ago, the company has successfully raised $2.2 million in investment from firms such as Sierra Ventures, based in the Bay Area, and Tech Square Ventures, located in Atlanta, to facilitate its growth.

“The API market is substantial,” Ahrens emphasized, highlighting the company’s potential. “With 11 million developers working with APIs, we estimate a multi-billion dollar addressable market for our services.”
