Astra to Launch Rocket from Cape Canaveral in January

Astra Expands Launch Capabilities to Florida
Astra is broadening its operational reach beyond its initial launch location. Previously, the company conducted its first rocket launches exclusively from Kodiak, Alaska.
A mission scheduled for January 2022 will mark a significant expansion. This launch, contracted by NASA, will originate from Cape Canaveral, Florida, as announced on Monday morning.
Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 46
The launch is slated to occur at Space Launch Complex 46, situated within the extensive Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This location previously served as a missile testing facility.
Following a period of inactivity, the complex was reactivated for commercial space operations in 1997. It experienced intermittent use until its last mission in 2019.
Benefits of the Expansion
This expansion represents a substantial achievement for Astra and the U.S. Space Force’s Space Launch Delta 45. The Delta 45 provides crucial support for launches originating from U.S. territory.
Notably, the mission received all necessary approvals within a remarkably short timeframe – “months” – a significant improvement compared to the years previously required for launch authorization.
Strategic Advantages
Having an additional launch site provides Astra with greater flexibility in targeting a wider range of orbital parameters for client payloads. Florida’s historically stable weather patterns also contribute to its appeal as a launch location.
Astra’s design philosophy centers around a small rocket and streamlined launch operations. This allows for deployment from diverse locations with minimal staffing and preparation.
Diversifying its launch site portfolio effectively demonstrates this capability in practice.
TC Sessions: Space 2021
Benjamin Lyon and Kelyn Brannon from Astra will be featured speakers at TC Sessions: Space 2021 next week. Attendees will gain further insights into the company’s plans for the coming year.
