Skype Audio Issues: Resolving Unexpected Volume Changes

When launching Skype, users sometimes experience a significant reduction in system audio volume. This can be disruptive, particularly when needing to hear sounds from other applications during a call.

Understanding the Problem

A reader contacted How-To Geek experiencing this issue while gaming with their nephew. Skype seemed to drastically lower the volume of all other audio sources upon startup.

Despite searching within Skype’s settings, no options were found to control this volume adjustment. Manually adjusting volumes via the Windows Volume Mixer proved tedious and temporary.

The Root Cause: Windows Automatic Adjustments

The issue isn't caused by Skype itself, but by a feature within Windows.

Windows identifies Skype as a communication application and automatically lowers the volume of other sounds. This is intended to improve clarity for both the user and their communication partner, minimizing background noise and preventing audio feedback.

However, this behavior isn’t always desirable, especially when simultaneous audio from other applications, like games, is needed.

Fixing the Volume Dampening Effect

To resolve this, adjustments must be made within the Windows Control Panel. Navigate to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound.

Alternatively, you can directly access the Sound settings by typing “mmsys.cpl” into the Run dialog box.

Configuring Communication Settings

Select the “Communications” tab. By default, Windows reduces the volume of other sounds by 80% when a communication application is active.

You have several options: reduce the volume by 50%, completely mute other sounds, or disable the automatic adjustment entirely.

For most users, setting the adjustment to “Do nothing” is the most effective solution. Individual volume levels can then be fine-tuned using the Volume Mixer if needed.

Using headphones can further isolate game sounds and prevent them from being picked up by the microphone.
