Reset Android Launcher to Default - Easy Guide

Reverting to the Default Android Launcher
Experimenting with alternative application launchers on Android can be enjoyable. However, the process of returning to the original Google launcher isn't always immediately apparent.
Understanding Default App Settings
Modifying default applications can sometimes present challenges. Specifically, altering the default launcher proved complex enough that Google introduced a more intuitive method for doing so beginning with Android 4.4.
This method remained largely consistent until Android 7.0, at which point Google implemented minor adjustments. The following outlines how to change the launcher across various Android versions, beginning with the most recent.
Changing Launchers on Different Android Versions
The steps to revert to the default launcher vary slightly depending on your Android version.
- Android 7.0 and Later: The process is straightforward. Simply long-press on an empty area of your home screen.
A menu will appear, presenting you with a choice of launchers. Select the Google Now Launcher (or the default launcher name specific to your device) from this list.
- Android 4.4 - 6.0: Navigate to your device's Settings menu.
Locate the Apps section (it may be labeled differently, such as Application Manager).
Within the Apps section, find and select Default Apps.
Tap on Home app and choose your preferred default launcher, which will typically be the Google Now Launcher or a similar default option.
By following these steps, you can easily switch back to the default Android launcher and restore your familiar home screen experience.
Modifying the Default Launcher in Android 7.x Nougat
Within Android Nougat, the configuration for selecting your preferred default launcher is integrated with the system for managing all other default applications. This logical placement, while consistent, may not be immediately apparent, particularly for users accustomed to earlier Android versions.
The initial step involves accessing the device's Settings application. This can be achieved by swiping down from the top of the screen twice to reveal the quick settings panel, then selecting the gear-shaped icon.

Subsequently, scroll down the Settings menu and select "Apps," followed by tapping the settings icon within that menu.

Within this section, locate the "Home app" entry. Selecting this option allows you to modify your launcher preference, completing the process.

The system then applies your selection, establishing the chosen application as the default interface for accessing your apps and widgets.

Adjusting the default launcher within Android 4.4 through 6.x is a remarkably straightforward process. Begin by swiping down from the top of the screen twice to reveal the quick settings panel. Then, select the settings cog icon to access the main Settings menu.
Subsequently, scroll down the settings list and tap on the "Home" option. This completes the initial step. It’s important to remember that this option will only be visible if you have more than one launcher application currently installed on your device.
NOTE: Certain Samsung smartphones may not display the "Home" option directly within the primary Settings menu. If this is the case, the procedure will resemble that of Android 7.0 (Nougat) and later versions—navigate to Settings > Applications > Default applications.

The Home menu provides a user-friendly interface for selecting your preferred application launcher.
Within this menu, you can not only choose a new launcher but also uninstall launchers that are no longer in use. The currently active default launcher will have its deletion option disabled (or lack a delete icon entirely, depending on the Android version). Older Android systems often feature a default launcher simply labeled "Launcher."
More recent devices frequently designate "Google Now Launcher" as the standard default option. However, this can vary based on the device manufacturer. For instance, Samsung's default is often called "TouchWiz," while LG devices typically use "Home" as the default launcher name.

Modifying the Default Launcher on Android Versions Below 4.4
For Android devices operating on versions earlier than 4.4, altering the default launcher requires a somewhat distinct process compared to newer systems.
Initially, users must access the Settings menu, then navigate to Apps, and subsequently select the "All" tab.

Within the list of applications, locate the currently active application launcher. In our demonstration, the Google Now Launcher is presently set as the default.
Selecting the current default launcher will reveal a "Launch by Default" section further down the page.

To disable the current default setting, tap the "Clear defaults" option. Following this, pressing the home button on your device will initiate the launcher selection process.

Choose your desired launcher from the presented options. You can then select "Always" to permanently set your choice, or "Just once" for a temporary trial.
The process is now complete. Whether reverting to a previously used launcher or returning to the original default, the necessary adjustments can be made with a few simple steps within the appropriate settings menu.
