When utilizing several Google accounts concurrently, it’s common to prefer one as the default. Experiencing a different account loading automatically can be inconvenient. This article details how to designate your preferred account as the default.

A reader contacted us with a challenge involving multiple Google accounts – a personal account, a work account managed by their employer, and a college account recently transitioned to Google’s management system.

Previously, Google tools like Gmail or Google Calendar consistently defaulted to their personal account. However, this has changed, and the work account now loads first.

Despite extensive searching through account menus and the Google dashboard, the reader found no option to manually select a default account. They expressed concern about the need to repeatedly log in and out.

The Solution: Login Order Matters

While not explicitly documented, Google’s multi-login system operates based on the order of account logins. A complete sign-out of all accounts is required to reset this behavior.

We hypothesize that a recent event – such as a browser update, operating system update, system crash, or cookie clearing – prompted a re-login process. Logging into the work account first established it as the default.

The key is this: the first account you log into when using Google’s multi-login feature becomes the default for the current session.

Subsequent logouts will shift the default to the next account in the login sequence. Logging out of all accounts resets the cycle, making the next login the new default.

Future Improvements

A dedicated “set as default” feature would greatly improve usability. Until then, remembering to log in to your desired default account first is the workaround.
