Move Default Photo Folder to SD Card on Android

Managing Photo Storage on Your Android Device
Modern smartphones boast high-resolution cameras, making it incredibly simple to accumulate a large number of photos. This can quickly consume your phone’s internal storage capacity. Let’s explore how to redirect the default save location from your phone’s internal memory to the larger storage space offered by an SD card.
Reader Question
A reader contacted us concerned about their Android phone’s dwindling storage, despite having 16GB of internal memory and a 32GB microSD card installed. Investigation revealed that photos and videos were consuming nearly all available internal storage.
The reader inquired about changing the camera’s default save location from the internal memory’s /DCIM/ folder to a folder on the SD card. They also questioned the universal use of the /DCIM/ folder across digital cameras.
Despite extensive searching within the Android settings, the reader was unable to locate the necessary configuration option. They hoped to avoid rooting the phone or making complex modifications.
Understanding the DCIM Folder
Before addressing the primary question, let's clarify the purpose of the /DCIM/ folder. DCIM stands for "Digital Camera Image" and has been a standard naming convention for over ten years.
This folder structure is nearly universally adopted by both high-end digital cameras and smartphone cameras.
Changing the Default Save Location
Adjusting the default save location for your photos and videos is a relatively straightforward process. It’s common to search within the main Android operating system settings, but the relevant setting resides within the camera application’s settings menu.
Many users rarely access the camera app’s menu beyond adjusting the flash, making this setting easily overlooked.
To initiate the change, launch the camera application and tap the menu button on your phone.
Select "Setting" – represented by the central icon resembling a set of sliders. Then, within the Settings menu, choose "Settings" again (the sliders on the far right).
You’ve now navigated past the icon-based menu system and are presented with text-based options. Select "Storage" at the top of the menu. In the subsequent menu, choose "SD Card."
After making this change, capture a test photo. Then, verify the new settings by browsing your phone’s file system or mounting the phone/SD card to your computer via USB. Confirm that a new /DCIM/ folder has been created on the SD card and contains your test image.
Finally, transfer the contents of the original /DCIM/ folder from your internal memory to the SD card. You can then safely delete the old folder to reclaim valuable storage space.
