AI Disinformation: Startup Counterattack

The Rise of Disinformation and a New Startup's Response
The proliferation of disinformation, particularly with the rapid advancement of AI, presents a significant risk not only to individuals but also to businesses. Refute, a startup headquartered in London, addresses this challenge by identifying and countering disinformation campaigns targeting commercial organizations.
Several elements contribute to the increasing frequency of disinformation attacks. These include global political instability and the accessibility of generative AI tools used to fabricate deceptive content.
Targeting Businesses and Their Ecosystems
Increasingly, sophisticated disinformation efforts—often orchestrated by state-sponsored groups or business rivals—are directed at companies, their supply networks, and key personnel. Such attacks can result in substantial damage to reputation and significant financial losses.
Tom Garnett, CEO and co-founder of Refute, explained to TechCrunch that current customers often rely on social and media monitoring tools to gauge the disinformation threat. However, these tools are typically designed for marketing and are largely reactive.
Garnett further noted that these existing systems can be unreliable, generating excessive noise and obscuring the origin of narratives. Consequently, users struggle to fully comprehend and effectively address the complete scope of the threat.
A Competitive Landscape
The growing importance of combating disinformation is evidenced by the emergence of numerous startups in this space. Refute’s competitors include Alethea, which has secured $30 million in funding, Blackbird AI ($30.6 million), and Logically AI ($36.7 million).
“Our approach distinguishes us within the market by providing both detection and response capabilities. Many other solutions focus primarily on identifying disinformation,” Garnett stated.
How Refute Operates
Refute identifies disinformation campaigns by analyzing the behavioral patterns of those perpetrating them – the “threat actors.”
Tom Garnett’s professional background includes roles in national security at Detica and BAE Systems, where he developed large-scale data analysis solutions for investigating criminal activities, with a particular emphasis on countering terrorist threats.
He recognized the potential to apply similar technologies to combat commercial crime, including cyberattacks and financial fraud. This realization led him to Ripjar, where he led the government and cybersecurity division, focusing on sales, development, and delivery of solutions for various sectors.
Personal Experience Fuels the Mission
Vlad Galu, Refute’s co-founder, experienced the impact of disinformation firsthand growing up in Romania during the 1980s and 1990s. He shared with TechCrunch: “I was involved in building fundamental internet infrastructure and services in Romania and Central-Eastern Europe.
Constructing these systems from the ground up during a period of technological advancement and limited legal oversight necessitated the implementation of robust defense strategies against threats targeting both platforms and their users.”
Funding and Backing
Refute has recently completed a £2.3 million ($2.9 million) pre-seed funding round, led by U.K.-based investors Playfair and Episode 1. Additional investors include Notion Capital and Amadeus Capital Partners.
The company also received angel investment from Charlie Songhurst, Carlos Espinal, James Chappell, and Alastair Paterson.
Andrew Sheffield, principal at Playfair Capital, commented: “The current information environment makes discerning truth from falsehood increasingly difficult, and the cost of disseminating misleading information continues to decline. Tom and Vlad bring over four decades of combined experience in data analysis, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, identity management, and anti-money laundering efforts.”
