Apple Podcast Subscriptions & Redesigned App Unveiled

Apple Introduces Apple Podcasts Subscriptions
In response to growing competition from Spotify, Apple has announced a new expansion into podcast subscriptions. During today’s spring event, the company detailed its plans for a service enabling listeners to access “enhanced features,” such as ad-free experiences, early episode releases, and direct creator support.
This new subscription service will be integrated within Apple’s updated Podcasts application, alongside the currently available free podcast content. The launch follows reports indicating Spotify may surpass Apple in podcast listener numbers in 2021.
A Significant Update to Apple Podcasts
Apple CEO Tim Cook briefly presented the subscription model at the event’s commencement, characterizing it as “the most substantial evolution of Apple Podcasts since its inception.”
Alongside the subscription announcement, the Apple Podcasts app received a redesign. Updated show and episode pages now offer improved ease of use for listening, following, and sharing podcasts. A new “Channels” feature has also been implemented, allowing users to discover content from preferred creators and receive personalized recommendations. These channels will encompass both complimentary and premium offerings.
Channels and Enhanced Features
These channels are essentially curated collections of shows, as defined by creators, and feature “distinctive branding, descriptions, and visual elements,” according to Apple.
A “Smart Play” function is also being introduced, automatically initiating episodic shows from the newest installment and serialized shows from the beginning. Additional enhancements include the ability to save episodes for offline listening, an improved Search tab with access to Top Charts, and a revamped Apple Podcasts Connect dashboard for podcasters.
The updated dashboard empowers creators to manage show metadata, schedule releases, organize content into channels, oversee user access, and analyze performance through new metrics and visualization tools.
Availability and Initial Partners
Apple has confirmed that the new service will become available in May to listeners across over 170 countries and regions.
The initial premium subscriptions will be offered by a diverse range of content providers, including independent creators and established studios like Tenderfoot TV, Pushkin Industries, Radiotopia from PRX, and QCODE. Larger organizations such as NPR, the Los Angeles Times, The Athletic, and Sony Music Entertainment will also participate.
Apple’s Vision for the Future of Podcasting
“Apple revolutionized podcasting fifteen years ago, providing creators with a leading, open platform to inform, entertain, and inspire millions globally,” stated Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Today, Apple Podcasts remains the premier destination for discovering and enjoying a vast library of shows, and we are proud to spearhead the next phase of podcasting with Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. We are enthusiastic about introducing this powerful new platform to creators worldwide and eagerly anticipate the content they will produce.”
Prior Reporting and Spotify’s Influence
Reports regarding Apple’s podcast subscription plans initially surfaced in The Wall Street Journal, indicating the company was preparing to introduce a paid subscription option. Peter Kafka of Vox Media also predicted the announcement. Clues were also discovered within the iOS 14.5 beta, revealing a redesigned Podcasts app featuring an account button on the Listen Now tab, potentially for subscription management.
This move into the subscription podcast arena comes after substantial investment by Spotify, a key competitor to both Apple Podcasts and Apple Music. Spotify has also been a vocal critic of Apple’s practices.
Spotify’s Podcast Strategy
Spotify reported in February that its podcast library had tripled year-over-year, reaching 2.2 million shows. The company has secured exclusive deals with prominent figures such as Joe Rogan, Kim Kardashian, DC Comics, Michelle Obama, and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Furthermore, Spotify has acquired several podcast startups, ad technology companies, and studios, including Megaphone, Anchor, Gimlet, The Ringer, and Parcast. Recently, Spotify announced its own podcast subscription plans through Anchor and invested in live audio with the acquisition of Locker Room by Betty Labs. Spotify intends to share subscription revenue with creators, allowing them to retain a significant portion of their earnings.
Key Information for Podcast Producers:
Sources indicate that Apple will not impose restrictions on the subscription models podcast creators implement. The platform functions as an open marketplace, allowing producers to determine the benefits included with a subscription.
Subscription Models and Pricing:
Podcasts can remain entirely free, operate on a paid basis, or utilize a “freemium” structure. This allows for a combination of freely accessible content alongside premium, subscription-based offerings.
Subscription pricing begins at approximately $0.49 per month within the United States. However, creators retain the autonomy to establish their own pricing tiers.
Revenue Sharing and Distribution:
Apple’s revenue share is structured as a 30% commission during the first year of subscription services. This percentage is then reduced to 15% in subsequent years, mirroring the model used for streaming and other subscription-based products.
Podcasters are not obligated to exclusivity with Apple Podcasts. They are free to distribute their content across multiple platforms, such as Spotify, to maximize potential revenue.
Advertising and Data Privacy:
Currently, Apple does not offer advertising services for podcasts. This means creators will retain 100% of any advertising revenue generated.
The privacy of listeners is prioritized. Podcast creators will not have access to personally identifiable information like Apple IDs or email addresses. Analytics provided will be anonymized and aggregated.
Analytics and Channel Options:
Creators will gain access to new analytical metrics, including data on “most engaged listeners” and “top cities.” This information can be used to refine content and inform live event planning.
Subscriptions can be offered for individual podcasts or bundled into “Channels.” Services like Luminary and podcast networks like Radiotopia can function as Channels.
Channels, similar to individual shows, can be free, paid, or freemium, and offer customized pricing and availability on a country-by-country basis.
Technical Specifications:
Subscription content is managed and uploaded through Apple Podcasts Connect, bypassing traditional RSS feeds. This indicates Apple will handle content hosting and digital rights management (DRM).
Apple’s hosting infrastructure requires audio files to be submitted in WAV or FLAC formats.
Individual podcast episodes cannot be purchased as standalone items.
