iPhone Satellite Support: Emergency Calls and Messages?

iPhone Satellite Features: Limited to Emergency Communication
Recent speculation regarding satellite connectivity on upcoming iPhones has been clarified by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. While analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously indicated support for Low Earth Orbit satellite calls and messaging, Gurman’s reporting suggests a more constrained implementation.
Emergency Messaging via Satellite
Apple is not currently developing iPhones as full-fledged satellite phones. Instead, the company is focusing on two emergency-focused features utilizing satellite networks.
The first, internally codenamed “Stewie,” is Emergency Message via Satellite. This will function as a third messaging protocol within the Messages app, alongside iMessage and SMS.
This feature will enable users to send texts to emergency services even without cellular coverage. It is particularly valuable in remote areas, such as mountainous regions and dense forests, where traditional communication methods fail.
Reporting Critical Incidents
A second satellite-based feature is also under development, designed for reporting emergencies like plane crashes or wildfires.
This system will allow detailed incident reports, prompting users for crucial information. Specific questions will address the need for search-and-rescue operations and potential threats, such as armed individuals nearby.
The system can automatically transmit the reporter’s location to authorities, along with relevant medical data from the Health app. This includes age, medications, medical history, height, and weight.
Furthermore, the feature will notify the user’s designated emergency contacts.
Limitations and Availability
The functionality of these features will be dependent on satellite visibility and coverage. Service may be unavailable in certain geographic locations.
Users may need to physically move to an open area with a clear view of the sky to establish a satellite connection with their iPhone.
According to Gurman’s sources, these features are unlikely to be available before the end of the year. Consequently, the next iPhone models, anticipated for release in September, will not initially support satellite messaging.
