Apple Watch Blood Oxygen Monitoring Returns - Latest Updates

Apple Reintroduces Blood Oxygen Feature with Redesign
On Thursday, Apple revealed a revamped Blood Oxygen feature intended for select Watch Series 8, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra models. This adjustment allows Apple to reinstate blood oxygen monitoring while navigating the restrictions imposed by an import ban from the International Trade Commission (ITC).
Shift in Data Processing
The measurement and calculation of blood oxygen data will now occur on the user’s connected iPhone. Results will be accessible within the Respiratory section of the Health app. Consequently, direct viewing of this data on the Apple Watch itself will no longer be possible; users must consult their iPhone.
U.S. Customs Ruling Enables Import
Apple states that this update is made possible by a recent decision from U.S. Customs. This ruling permits the importation of Apple Watches equipped with the redesigned Blood Oxygen functionality.
Impact on Existing Models
This modification does not impact Apple Watches previously sold with the original feature version. Similarly, units purchased outside of the United States remain unaffected.
Availability of the Redesigned Feature
The redesigned feature is exclusively for Apple Watches sold after the ITC import ban went into effect in early 2024. Affected users will gain access through a combined iPhone and Apple Watch software update released on Thursday.
Legal Dispute with Masimo
This development arises from an ongoing legal battle between Apple and medical device manufacturer Masimo. Masimo alleges that Apple misappropriated its pulse oximetry technology following preliminary discussions regarding a potential partnership.
ITC Ruling and Initial Feature Removal
In 2023, Masimo achieved a favorable outcome at the ITC, securing a ban on imports of Apple Watches with blood oxygen monitoring. The commission determined that Apple’s technology infringed upon Masimo’s patents, leading Apple to temporarily remove the feature.
Counter-Suit and Appeal
Apple responded with a counter-suit, asserting that Masimo copied Apple Watch features for use in its own smartwatches. Furthermore, Apple has filed an appeal challenging the ITC ban.
