iPhone 16e: Apple's $599 AI Phone Launching February 28

Apple Introduces the iPhone 16e with Integrated AI
As predicted, Apple officially unveiled the refreshed iPhone SE on Tuesday. This fourth-generation iteration arrives after a three-year period since the last significant update to the budget-friendly smartphone. However, this release incorporates a notable change. The 'SE' designation has been removed, aligning the device more closely with Apple’s premium flagship models.
Key Features and Availability
The new iPhone 16e is priced starting at $599 and will be available for shipment beginning February 28.
Apple Intelligence: A Core Enhancement
A primary feature of the iPhone 16e is Apple Intelligence, the company’s response to AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It utilizes compact models capable of running directly on the device.
These on-device models facilitate functions such as text summarization, letter composition, and image generation.
Exclusive Access to Apple Intelligence
The 16e now joins an exclusive group of iPhones – including the entire iPhone 16 series and the iPhone 15 Pro – that can leverage the capabilities of Apple Intelligence. This is largely due to the inclusion of the A18 processor.
This in-house chip is also featured throughout the flagship iPhone 16 lineup.
Siri and ChatGPT Integration
Similar to other iPhones equipped with Apple Intelligence, the 16e allows users to access ChatGPT through Siri, free of charge, without requiring an OpenAI account.
Advancements in Modem Technology
The new handset is also the first to incorporate Apple’s internally developed modem, the Apple C1. This development signifies the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its reliance on external chip manufacturers like Qualcomm and Intel.
Apple is prioritizing silicon specifically engineered for its own devices.
Design Updates and Connectivity
The iPhone 16e features a modernized design, abandoning the Touch ID home button in favor of Face ID. It also reinstates the camera notch originally seen on the iPhone X.
Furthermore, the Lightning port has been replaced with USB-C, as Apple standardizes this connector across its product range.
Display and Battery Performance
The handset boasts a 6.1-inch OLED display and, according to Apple, delivers “the best battery life ever on a 6.1-inch iPhone.” This represents an increase from the 4.8-inch screen found on the third-generation SE.
Apple states the device offers up to 12 hours more battery life per charge compared to previous SE models, a benefit attributed to the six-core A18 chip.
Performance Specifications
The A18 chip also includes a 16-core neural engine for AI processing and a four-core GPU. This GPU configuration is slightly less powerful than the five-core graphics processor in the iPhone 16 and the six-core GPU in the 16 Pro.
Camera Capabilities
The iPhone 16e is equipped with a single rear-facing 48-megapixel camera, offering 2x zoom functionality. The company promotes this as a “two-in-one” camera, enabling the capture of both 48-megapixel and 24-megapixel images.
The front-facing camera is Apple’s TrueDepth camera, supporting Face ID for secure unlocking.
Market Context and Challenges
The launch of the new phone occurs at a critical juncture for Apple. The company’s market share in China, a key market, has recently decreased by 11%.
This decline is influenced by factors such as the growing popularity of Huawei and other domestic smartphone manufacturers, as well as the current unavailability of Apple Intelligence in mainland China.
Expansion Efforts in China
Apple has reportedly engaged in discussions with Tencent and ByteDance to explore the possibility of introducing a localized version of its generative AI offering to China.
More recently, reports indicate a partnership with Alibaba as a local generative AI collaborator.
The iPhone SE’s Strategic Importance
The original iPhone SE, released in 2016, has proven to be a successful model for Apple in both China and India, the world’s largest and second-largest smartphone markets.
The SE’s release schedule has been less predictable than annual flagship launches, with releases in 2020, 2022, and now 2025.
Despite the $100 price increase compared to the previous SE model, the more advanced budget handset is expected to assist the company in regaining market share in these crucial regions.
Pre-Order and Shipping Information
Preorders for the iPhone 16e will commence on Friday, February 21. The device will begin shipping precisely one week later.
