HomePod Mini Released: Apple's $99 Smart Speaker

During today’s iPhone-focused hardware presentation, Apple introduced the HomePod Mini, which is priced at $99.

The HomePod Mini is demonstrably intended to attract a wider range of customers. While the initial HomePod garnered positive feedback from audio enthusiasts, its substantial cost presented a significant obstacle for potential users seeking an affordable smart speaker. Further impacting its position as a “smart speaker” was the fact that Siri’s capabilities lagged behind those of Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for several years, making the speaker a less comprehensive option for individuals aiming to integrate a complete smart home system.

Deliveries of the new device will begin the week of November 16th. It will be available in white and space grey finishes.

The HomePod Mini moves away from the cylindrical design of the larger HomePod, adopting a more rounded, spherical form, and retains the mesh fabric exterior. It features the same integrated display that enables users to activate Siri and control volume, providing a visually distinct aesthetic compared to competing smart devices. The device also incorporates Apple’s S5 chip, which the company states enhances the HomePod Mini’s “computational audio” performance.

Similar to the original HomePod, users can create a stereo setup with two HomePod Minis and leverage multiple HomePod devices throughout their home for a new “Intercom” functionality.
