Apple Research App Reveals Insights into Hearing Health

In 2019, Apple initiated the Research app, representing a significant step towards a more focused approach to user health. This application leverages data gathered from iPhone and Apple Watch devices.

The app initially launched with four distinct research areas: heart health, women’s health, movement, and hearing.

Study Findings on Environmental Sound Exposure

Today, Apple is releasing findings from the hearing study, conducted in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Public Health. This release coincides with the approach of World Hearing Day.

Hearing loss is a critical issue, particularly given Apple’s substantial and expanding presence in the headphone market.

Headphones and Noise Level Monitoring

The proliferation of headphone technology has unfortunately led to an increase in long-term hearing loss. Apple has proactively integrated noise-level readings into its mobile operating systems.

These readings provide users with notifications regarding potentially damaging sound environments. This data is also accessible within the Health app, displaying both headphone audio levels and surrounding environmental sound levels.

Key Statistics from the U.S. Study

A study involving “thousands” of participants in the U.S. revealed that 25% experience sound exposure levels exceeding the World Health Organization’s (WHO) daily recommendations.

Furthermore, 50% of survey respondents currently or previously worked in noisy environments.

Notably, these figures remain elevated even with the widespread shift to remote work during the pandemic.

Expert Commentary on the Results

“Even during this pandemic, when many people are staying home, we’re still seeing 25% of our participants experiencing high environmental sound exposures,” states Rick Neitzel, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan.

“The results of this study can improve our understanding of potentially harmful exposures, and help identify ways that people can proactively protect their hearing.”

Headphone Usage and Tinnitus

The survey also indicated that 10% of participants surpass the recommended weekly headphone exposure limit.

A quarter of those surveyed reported experiencing tinnitus – ringing in the ears – several times a week or more.
