Apple Puts Pegatron on Probation Over Labor Violations

Apple has halted new projects with its vendor Pegatron following the discovery that the Taiwanese manufacturer incorrectly categorized student employees. Apple further stated that Pegatron was in breach of its Supplier Code of Conduct.
As detailed in a communication to Bloomberg, Apple explained, “Pegatron improperly identified student workers participating in their program and submitted inaccurate documentation to conceal breaches of our Code, specifically permitting students to work during nighttime hours and/or exceeding standard work limits, and, in certain instances, assigning tasks outside their field of study.”
Bloomberg reports that Apple has put Pegatron under review pending the completion of necessary improvements.
Pegatron is a key competitor to Foxconn, another significant supplier for Apple. While both firms are based in Taiwan, they operate manufacturing facilities in China and other nations, and have previously been subject to examination regarding their workplace practices. Complaints have been made against both companies alleging demands for excessively long working hours.
TechCrunch has reached out to both Apple and Pegatron seeking further information.
