Name Change for the Gulf of Mexico: Apple Follows Google

Apple Maps is preparing to update its cartography to reflect the recent renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

This adjustment comes after a similar move by Google Maps earlier in the week, both companies acting to adhere to a directive from the United States government.

Compliance with Executive Order

The change is a direct result of an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, which officially altered the name of the geographical feature.

As reported by Bloomberg, American Apple users can anticipate seeing the “Gulf of America” designation as early as Tuesday.

The rollout of this new name will subsequently be extended to users internationally.

How Google Maps Displays the New Name

Currently, Google Maps displays a dual naming convention globally: “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

Users located in Mexico and the United States, however, are presented with the name corresponding to their respective country.

Mexican Government's Response

The decision has prompted a response from the Mexican government.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has formally requested that Google reconsider its implementation of the name change via a written letter.

Despite this appeal, both Apple and Google appear to be proceeding in accordance with the instructions of the current U.S. presidential administration.
