Apple Digital ID: Passport on Your iPhone for TSA Checkpoints

Digital Passports Now Available on Apple Devices

U.S. citizens who own an Apple Watch or iPhone can now store a digital version of their U.S. passport directly on their devices.

This digital passport can be utilized at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in over 250 airports nationwide for domestic travel.

Introducing Digital ID

The new functionality, termed Digital ID, was initially revealed alongside the iOS 17 release.

It expands the range of government-issued identification documents compatible with Apple Wallet to include passports.

Currently, this feature has been implemented in a dozen states and Puerto Rico, with further expansion planned.

Functionality and Limitations

Digital ID within Apple Wallet allows users to generate and display a valid ID, even without a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state identification card.

It’s important to note that this digital version does not supersede the need for a physical passport.

Currently, it is not applicable for international travel or border crossings, as confirmed by Apple.

To add a passport to Apple Wallet, users should tap the “Add” (+) button within the app.

Then, select “Driver’s License or ID Cards” and proceed by choosing Digital ID.

The setup process involves scanning the photograph page of the passport using the iPhone’s camera.

Additionally, the chip embedded in the passport’s back cover must be scanned to verify its authenticity.

A selfie is required for verification, followed by a series of facial and head movements to enhance security.

The Future of Digital Wallets

The inclusion of ID support in Apple Wallet represents a significant step towards making iPhones a complete replacement for traditional physical wallets.

The wallet already supports payment cards, loyalty programs, tickets, and various passes.

Using Digital ID in Practice

Presenting Digital ID in person mirrors the experience of using Apple Pay.

Access your Wallet by double-clicking the side or Home button, then select Digital ID.

Hold the iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader and authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID.

Users can preview the requested identity information before completing the verification process.

The feature is currently in beta, with full deployment to all TSA checkpoint readers still underway.

The TSA website provides a list of states currently supporting mobile ID, but advises travelers to also carry their physical identification.

Apple anticipates that Digital ID will eventually be accepted by businesses and organizations for age verification purposes.

Age Verification and Privacy

This includes venues like bars and event locations, where proof of age is required for entry.

Online platforms that restrict access to adult content may also integrate Apple’s APIs for age verification.

For example, alcohol delivery services like Uber Eats could utilize this feature during the ordering process.

Users will be able to confirm they are over 21 without disclosing personal details like their name, address, or date of birth.

Apple assures users that it does not track when or where their ID is presented, nor does it access the shared data.

The process functions similarly to Apple Pay, eliminating the need to unlock the phone or physically hand it over for ID presentation.
