Apple AR Experience: 'For All Mankind' Launch

Apple Launches Augmented Reality Experience for “For All Mankind”
A new augmented reality application, titled “For All Mankind: Time Capsule,” has been developed by Apple as a promotional tool for the second season of “For All Mankind.” The season is scheduled to premiere on February 19th via Apple TV+.
App Details and Show Context
The app presents a noteworthy demonstration of Apple’s continuing investment in AR technology, irrespective of whether viewers are already familiar with the show. “For All Mankind” explores an alternate historical narrative where the Soviet Union achieved the first lunar landing, resulting in a prolonged space race extending into the 1970s and beyond.
Exploring the Stevens Family
“Time Capsule” is set during the ten-year period separating the first and second seasons. It focuses on the evolving relationship between Danny Stevens and his parents, astronauts Gordo and Tracy Stevens. Downloading the free iOS application allows users to engage with various items.
Interactive Elements and Features
These interactive elements, including a mixtape and an Apple II computer, serve to illustrate the family dynamics. The experience is designed as a linear progression, offering between 45 and 60 minutes of content.
However, the app also encourages repeated visits and deeper exploration. Users can access “D-mail” and participate in a text-based adventure game on the computer. Devices equipped with a LiDAR scanner – such as the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, or iPad Pro – can utilize a virtual slide projector to display Danny’s family photos directly onto the user’s walls.
Development and Creative Input
Ben McGinnis, a producer for “For All Mankind,” revealed that the app’s creation occurred concurrently with the production of the show’s second season. The creative team collaborated closely with Apple to determine which objects would most effectively convey the story.
Expanding the Show's Universe
Ron Moore, the show’s creator and executive producer, expressed his enthusiasm for providing fans with novel avenues to immerse themselves in the show’s world and characters. He noted that the writers frequently develop more content than is ultimately included in the televised episodes.
Unveiling Additional Story Details
Moore explained that fans often desire a deeper understanding of the show’s narrative and characters. The team had previously created supplementary materials, such as love letters and news broadcasts, which appeared briefly on screen.
These materials, along with new content from writer Stephanie Shannon, have been incorporated into the app. The intention, Moore emphasized, is to “respect the audience’s preference for a straightforward viewing experience.”
Enhancing the Viewing Experience
He further stated that viewers can enjoy “For All Mankind” without utilizing the AR features. However, engaging with the AR experience beforehand can significantly enrich their overall understanding and enjoyment of the show.
