Several users reported inconsistencies in image generation. For instance, a Reddit user observed that Image Playground repeatedly produced images of hands with six fingers when prompted for a close-up of a hand. Other users encountered difficulties generating images from straightforward prompts like “old man” or “flower.”
Some questioned the app’s overall purpose, suggesting it felt simplistic compared to established AI image generators. However, it’s important to note that not all feedback was negative; certain users found the app to be an enjoyable experience.
WWDC Announcement: A New Direction
During this year’s WWDC, Apple announced plans to significantly improve Image Playground through integration with ChatGPT. This enhancement aims to deliver a more sophisticated and effective AI image generation service.
The ChatGPT integration will unlock access to a wider range of styles, moving beyond the emoji-inspired aesthetic that Image Playground initially offered.
New Artistic Styles
Users will now be able to create images in styles such as: Oil Painting, Watercolor, Vector, Anime, and Print. Additionally, a new “Any Style” option will allow for precise descriptions of desired image characteristics. These new styles will be accessible under a “ChatGPT style” banner.
Previously, the app was limited to Animation, Illustration, Sketch, and Genmoji styles.
Privacy and Data Handling
Apple assures users that image descriptions will be sent to ChatGPT only with explicit permission. The company emphasizes that no data will be shared without user consent.
Strategic Implications
By incorporating ChatGPT, Apple is revitalizing Image Playground and positioning it as a more competitive alternative to other free AI image creation applications.

Wider OpenAI Integration
Siri now utilizes ChatGPT when unable to answer questions independently or when specifically requested by the user. Furthermore, ChatGPT has been integrated into system-wide tools like Writing Tools, enabling users to generate, rewrite, and summarize text within apps such as Notes and Mail.
Release Timeline
The updated Image Playground application is scheduled for release alongside iOS 26 this fall.
