Apple Unveils iBooks Author: A New Era for Digital Publishing

On Thursday, Apple presented its newest software innovation, iBooks Author, during a live event hosted at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. This launch has sparked considerable discussion, with some industry observers suggesting it could fundamentally alter the landscape for educators, authors, and publishing houses.

Introducing iBooks Author and iBooks 2

iBooks Author is specifically engineered to empower writers and publishers in the creation of dynamic, multimedia-rich e-textbooks. These textbooks can then be distributed and sold through Apple’s iBooks store and experienced via the redesigned iBooks 2 application for the iPad.

Simplified Multimedia Textbook Creation

While multimedia e-textbooks are not entirely new, iBooks Author streamlines the creation process. Users can readily write content or import existing text from programs like Pages or Microsoft Word.

The application facilitates the seamless integration of diverse media elements, including video, images, photo galleries, Keynote presentations, interactive annotations, 3D models, and custom HTML.

A Familiar Interface and Instant Preview

The application’s interface shares similarities with Apple’s Pages word processor. Elements and supporting files can be easily added and arranged.

A key feature is the instant preview functionality, allowing authors to visualize their book’s appearance as it is being written and developed. Pre-designed templates are also included to assist users in getting started.

Beyond Textbooks: Versatility of iBooks Author

The capabilities of iBooks Author extend far beyond the realm of educational materials. It is equally suitable for crafting cookbooks, children’s picture books, instructional guides, or even interactive fiction.

Books published to the iBooks store can be offered at no cost, or textbooks can be priced at a fixed rate of $14.99. Apple is collaborating with major educational publishers such as Pearson, McGraw Hill, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to expand the availability of content on the iPad platform.

Availability and System Requirements

iBooks Author is available for free download from the App Store. However, it requires Apple’s Lion operating system, or a more recent version, to function correctly.
