Apple Launches New Mini Apps Partner Program

On Thursday, Apple unveiled a new initiative designed for developers: the Mini Apps Partner Program. This program introduces a lowered commission rate of 15% on purchases made within these smaller applications.

What are Mini Apps?

Apple defines a mini app as a self-contained experience. These applications are constructed using standard web technologies, such as HTML5 and JavaScript. They are then distributed and accessed through a larger, natively installed application.

While the technology supporting mini apps has been present within the App Store for almost ten years, this marks the first instance of a reduced commission being offered specifically for transactions occurring within them.

Existing Guidelines and Requirements

In 2017, Apple incorporated specific guidelines for mini apps into its App Review Guidelines. Guideline 4.7 explicitly permits developers to integrate mini apps, mini games, chatbots, and other similar functionalities into their primary applications.

This guideline also outlines the necessary procedures for handling sensitive data and filtering inappropriate content, mirroring the standards applied to native apps.

Eligibility for the Program

To participate in the new Mini App program, the primary application hosting the mini apps must be available on both iOS and iPadOS. It must also be listed on the App Store.

Furthermore, developers must adhere to the Apple Developer Program License Agreement and the existing App Review Guidelines, including all stipulations pertaining to mini apps.

New Technological Requirements

Beyond existing requirements, the program introduces new stipulations. Apps must now support specific Apple technologies, including the Advanced Commerce API and the Declared Age Rating API.

These APIs ensure that content is age-appropriate and that the app utilizes Apple’s in-app purchase system. Developers are also required to relay information regarding user refunds to Apple.

Benefits for Developers

Apple presents this program as a means for developers hosting mini apps and games to expand their reach and grow their businesses on the App Store.

The reduced commission incentivizes the adoption of Apple’s technologies, including its security and safety features. This cost saving allows developers to reinvest in their mini app programs.

Maintaining Apple’s Commission Structure

The program also safeguards Apple’s ability to collect a commission from mini applications as the market evolves and new user experiences emerge.

Current Landscape of Mini Apps

Currently, numerous native iOS apps incorporate mini apps. Examples include messaging platforms like LINE and WeChat, and gaming hubs like Discord.

Recently, AI platforms have also begun to integrate mini apps. ChatGPT, for instance, has launched apps accessible within its chatbot, featuring integrations with services like Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, and Canva.

Some analysts suggest that platforms like ChatGPT could potentially challenge the App Store’s business model if user engagement and transactions shift to these integrated experiences.

Previous Agreements

Bloomberg reported a prior agreement between Apple and Tencent, establishing a 15% commission on mini apps within WeChat. However, this agreement was not extended to other developers.

How to Join the Program

Developers interested in joining the Apple’s Mini Apps Partner Program can submit a request. This request requires detailed information about their host app, its eligibility, and the mini apps it contains.

Agreement to the program’s terms and conditions is also necessary. Once approved, the app must undergo a review process. (Apple currently requires developers to submit a manifest detailing the app’s software, metadata, and links to its mini apps.)

Eligible Purchases

In-app purchases within mini apps are eligible for the reduced commission if they involve digital goods and services. This includes consumable items, non-consumable items, auto-renewable subscriptions, and non-renewing subscriptions, according to Apple.
