Apple Introduces Advanced Commerce API for Enhanced In-App Purchases

On Thursday, Apple unveiled a new Advanced Commerce API designed to accommodate a wider range of in-app purchase models. These include subscriptions and content add-ons, offering developers greater flexibility.

Expanding Support for Diverse Business Models

The company clarified that the introduction of this API does not involve any alterations to the existing commission structure. This ensures continued clarity for developers regarding revenue sharing.

“The App Store processes billions of transactions each year, enabling developer growth and a superior customer experience,” Apple stated in its official announcement. “To further assist developers with their evolving business strategies – encompassing extensive content libraries, creator platforms, and subscriptions with optional enhancements – we are introducing the Advanced Commerce API.”

A supporting document released by Apple details the specific applications and eligibility criteria for developers seeking to utilize this new program. The criteria are categorized into three primary areas.

The first use case involves applications featuring substantial catalogs of one-time purchases that are regularly updated. Examples include platforms offering audiobooks or online courses.

Secondly, the API supports apps that integrate creator-driven content, allowing users to purchase access to this content through either one-time payments or renewable subscriptions.

Finally, the API facilitates the sale of add-ons within existing subscription services. This could include premium channels, sports packages, or region-specific content, all offered as renewable purchases.

Responding to Market Dynamics

Previously, Apple requested that Patreon, a creator platform, integrate with the App Store’s billing system to avoid removal from the platform. Patreon subsequently announced a phased migration to Apple’s payment system, scheduled for completion by November 2025.

The debut of the Advanced Commerce API may be a direct response to supporting business models similar to Patreon’s more effectively.

Strengthening the Apple Ecosystem

Following regulatory changes in the EU that mandated support for alternative payment processing and third-party app stores, Apple has been actively working to enhance the value proposition for developers remaining within its ecosystem.

Recent initiatives include permitting the distribution of retro game emulators globally. Furthermore, Apple has introduced a mechanism for developers to provide discounts to customers whose subscriptions have lapsed.
