Apple Rejects Elon Musk's Claims About App Store & OpenAI

Apple Denies Bias Allegations in App Store Regarding AI Applications

Apple has refuted claims made by Elon Musk concerning alleged bias within its App Store, specifically targeting AI applications that present competition to OpenAI.

According to a statement provided to the BBC, Apple emphasizes its practice of showcasing numerous applications through various methods. These include chart rankings, algorithmic suggestions, and expertly curated lists based on impartial evaluation standards.

Musk's Claims and xAI's Potential Lawsuit

This response follows a declaration by Musk, made through his company xAI, threatening legal action against Apple. He asserted that the iPhone manufacturer is operating in a way that effectively prevents any AI firm other than OpenAI from achieving the top position in the App Store.

A collaborative agreement was established between Apple and OpenAI in the previous year. This partnership involved the integration of OpenAI’s AI models, including ChatGPT, into Apple’s product ecosystem, such as Siri and iOS.

Evidence and Regulatory Scrutiny

Currently, there is no concrete evidence to support the assertion that the App Store demonstrates preferential treatment towards OpenAI compared to other AI developers. Notably, AI applications like Perplexity and DeepSeek have previously attained leading positions in the App Store charts throughout the past year.

Historically, Apple might have disregarded such accusations of chart manipulation. However, the company now operates under increased regulatory scrutiny and is subject to new legislation globally aimed at curbing its dominance in the app distribution landscape.

Furthermore, Apple recently faced criticism from a U.S. district judge in its legal dispute with Epic Games. The judge found Apple had not fully implemented the policy changes mandated by the court’s ruling.
