Apple CEO Urged Texas Governor to Veto Child Safety Bill

Apple's Concerns Over Texas Age Verification Law
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, is reported to have contacted Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The purpose of this communication was to discuss potential alterations to, or a complete veto of, a recently approved state law.
This legislation, if signed by Governor Abbott – who has not yet taken action – would necessitate Apple to verify the ages of all its device users.
Opposition from Tech Giants
Both Apple and Google have actively collaborated with various advocacy groups to oppose the bill's passage. Apple has specifically voiced concerns that implementing the Texas law could jeopardize the privacy of its users.
The core requirement of the bill centers around parental control. If a minor utilizes a device, their App Store account would be linked to their parents’ account.
This linkage would trigger notifications to parents regarding app downloads initiated by their children, requiring explicit approval or denial of each download.
Apple's Stated Concerns
According to an Apple spokesperson who spoke with The Wall Street Journal, the law’s enactment would compel app marketplaces to gather and retain substantial amounts of personally identifiable information.
This data collection would apply to all Texans seeking to download applications, even those offering simple services like weather forecasts or sports updates.
Arguments in Favor of the Bill
Proponents of the legislation contend that it will empower parents to exert greater influence over their children’s interactions with smartphones.
They believe increased parental oversight will foster a healthier relationship between children and their mobile devices.
Broader Legislative Trend
Texas is not alone in considering such measures. At least nine other states are currently evaluating similar legislation aimed at age verification and parental controls.
Apple previously succeeded in preventing a comparable bill from becoming law in Louisiana last year. However, that state is now re-examining the legislation for potential passage.
This indicates a growing national conversation regarding the regulation of app access and online safety for minors.
