iPhone 13 Gets Satellite Features with iOS 18.5 - Apple Update

Apple Extends Emergency Satellite Access to iPhone 13

On Monday, Apple launched iOS 18.5, bringing emergency satellite connectivity to iPhone 13 users for the very first time. Previously, this functionality was limited to devices running iPhone 14 or newer models.

Critical Communication When Networks Fail

The iPhone’s emergency satellite system is engineered for situations where traditional cellular or Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. It enables users to reach emergency services, transmit text messages via satellite, and share vital information with designated emergency contacts.

Furthermore, the system facilitates requests for roadside assistance. Rescuers have confirmed the feature’s life-saving impact, assisting individuals such as lost hikers, those affected by wildfires, and others in distress.

Beyond Emergencies: Carrier-Provided Satellite Services

While primarily intended for emergencies, satellite connectivity can also be utilized for routine communication. Users have the option to send text messages to friends via satellite, or leverage any additional features offered by their respective carriers.

Accessing Carrier Features in iOS 18.5

The iOS 18.5 update primarily focuses on enabling access to satellite services provided by carriers, including T-Mobile in partnership with Starlink. Users can verify feature availability within the Cellular menu in their iPhone’s Settings.

Additional Updates Included in iOS 18.5

The expansion of satellite services to iPhone 13 owners represents the most significant change in iOS 18.5. However, the update also incorporates a range of smaller enhancements for iPhone users.

Enhanced Screen Time Controls

A new feature has been added to Screen Time, Apple’s parental control application. This feature now alerts parents if their child successfully enters the correct passcode to modify Screen Time permissions.

Improvements to Mail and Apple TV

The Mail app has been updated to provide easier access to the “All Mail” category, now presented as a dedicated tab. A new Pride wallpaper is also available.

Subscribing to content from the Apple TV app on compatible smart TVs or connected devices is now simplified.

Bug Fixes and System Updates

Apple has resolved an issue causing the Apple Vision Pro app to launch with a black screen after being downloaded from the App Store. Additional bug fixes address problems with Siri, the launching of enterprise applications, and other issues.

Alongside iOS 18.5, iPadOS 18.5, visionOS 2.5, watchOS 11.5, and security updates for macOS Ventura 13.7.6 (22H625) and macOS Sonoma 14.7.6 have also been released.

This article has been updated to clarify the distinction between Apple’s Emergency Satellite features and carrier-provided satellite services, noting that carriers may offer satellite connectivity for non-emergency use cases.
