Apple Integrates ChatGPT & AI Models into Xcode

Apple Integrates OpenAI's ChatGPT into Xcode
During WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled the latest iteration of Xcode, its comprehensive application development environment. This new version features integrated functionality from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, designed to assist with coding tasks, documentation creation, and a range of other development processes.
Furthermore, Apple announced that developers now have the capability to utilize API keys. This allows them to incorporate AI models from various providers directly into Xcode, enabling AI-driven programming suggestions.
Enhanced Coding Experience with AI
“Developers are now able to integrate [AI] models directly into their coding workflow. This facilitates code writing, test creation, documentation generation, design iteration, and error correction,” Apple stated in a blog post detailing Xcode 26.
The new AI integrations within Xcode empower developers with tools to generate code previews and automate other routine tasks. Access to ChatGPT within Xcode is available without requiring account creation.
Existing ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts to benefit from increased rate limits.
Foundation Models Framework and On-Device AI
Alongside the Xcode update, Apple introduced the Foundation Models framework. This framework allows developers to leverage Apple’s own AI models, which operate directly on the device.
According to Apple, accessing these models requires only three lines of code. The company also highlighted the ability to run locally developed models on devices powered by Apple Silicon.
ChatGPT Selected Over Anthropic
Prior to the announcement, speculation suggested a potential partnership with Anthropic for a coding software solution. However, Apple ultimately chose to integrate ChatGPT into its development ecosystem.
Swift Assist and Previous Demonstrations
Apple had previously demonstrated Swift Assist, an AI-powered coding assistant for Xcode, last year. Despite the initial showcase, a wider release of Swift Assist did not occur at that time.
This integration marks a significant step towards incorporating AI directly into the core development experience for Apple platforms.
