Apple Announces iCloud+ - New Privacy Features

Apple Announces iCloud+ Updates
Apple is currently deploying a series of enhancements to its iCloud service, collectively branded as iCloud+. These new functionalities were unveiled during the company’s annual developer conference.
Subscribers who already pay for iCloud storage will automatically receive access to the iCloud+ features at no additional cost to their existing monthly subscription.
Enhanced Privacy Features
Within Safari, Apple is introducing a novel privacy safeguard known as Private Relay. This feature bears resemblance to a new DNS system that Apple has been developing in collaboration with Cloudflare.
Initially termed Oblivious DNS-over-HTTPS, Private Relay may prove to be a more intuitive designation for a relatively straightforward concept – the integration of DNS-over-HTTPS with proxy servers.
When activated, Private Relay prevents tracking of your browsing activity by your internet service provider, or any intermediary between your device and the server you are accessing. Further details regarding its operational mechanics will be released shortly.
‘Hide My Email’ Functionality
The second iCloud+ feature is ‘Hide my email’. This allows users to create randomized email addresses when registering for newsletters or establishing new online accounts.
Those familiar with the ‘Sign in with Apple’ feature will recognize that Apple already provides the option to utilize disposable iCloud email addresses. This new capability extends similar functionality to any application.
HomeKit Secure Video Improvements & Account Recovery
Apple is also refining HomeKit Secure Video. With the introduction of iCloud+, a distinction is being made between free iCloud users and those with paid subscriptions.
Previously, users paid solely for increased storage capacity. Now, the subscription fee encompasses both expanded storage and additional features. Plans begin at $0.99 per month for 50GB of storage (inclusive of iCloud+ features).
Furthermore, Apple is introducing two essential additions to iCloud accounts. Users can now designate a trusted contact for account recovery. This allows a friend to assist in regaining access to your data.
It’s important to note that this does not grant your friend access to your iCloud data; it simply provides a pathway for account restoration.
Legacy Contact Feature
The final significant update is a long-awaited feature: the ability to designate one or more legacy contacts. This enables the transfer of your data upon your passing.
This is a crucial addition, as many photo libraries and digital assets become inaccessible when their owners are no longer able to manage them.
