Claude Code Tool Bug Bricks Systems - Anthropic Issue

Claude Code Launch Plagued by Initial Issues
The initial release of Anthropic’s Claude Code, a new coding tool, has been met with unforeseen difficulties.
Reports surfaced on GitHub detailing issues stemming from Claude Code’s automatic update feature. Specifically, the update included flawed commands that caused instability and malfunctions on some user systems.
System Instability and Permissions Issues
The problems were particularly severe when Claude Code was installed with elevated privileges – at the “root” or “superuser” level.
These permissions allow programs to alter core operating system settings. The buggy commands then enabled applications to modify files normally protected from alteration, potentially rendering systems unusable – a scenario often referred to as “bricking.”
The core of the issue involved alterations to the access permissions of vital system files. These permissions dictate which programs and users have the authority to read, modify, or execute specific files and applications.
One GitHub user reported needing to utilize a separate “rescue instance” to rectify the file permissions that were inadvertently corrupted by the Claude Code commands.
Anthropic’s Response and Corrective Measures
Anthropic has acknowledged the problem and informed TechCrunch that the problematic commands have been removed from Claude Code.
A link to a troubleshooting guide has also been integrated into the program to assist users. Initially, this link contained a typographical error, but Anthropic confirms that this has since been corrected.
The company is working to ensure a stable and secure experience for all Claude Code users.
