Anthropic Introduces Web Search API for Claude AI Models

Anthropic has announced the release of a new API. This API empowers its Claude AI models with the ability to conduct searches across the internet.

According to a company press release issued on Wednesday, developers can now leverage this functionality to create Claude-powered applications. These applications will be capable of delivering current and relevant information.

Expanding AI Capabilities

The introduction of this API aligns with a broader trend among AI companies. These companies are actively seeking ways to enhance their models and attract a wider user base.

Just last week, Anthropic unveiled a tool designed to connect applications directly to Claude. Additionally, they expanded their “deep research” capability, allowing Claude to search through enterprise accounts, websites, and other data sources.

How the Web Search API Works

“Developers are now able to supplement Claude’s extensive knowledge base with timely, real-world data by activating the web search tool when submitting requests to our API,” Anthropic explained in their announcement.

This allows developers to build AI solutions that access up-to-date information without the need for managing their own web search infrastructure.

When the web search API is activated, Claude utilizes its reasoning abilities to assess whether a particular request would benefit from current data or specialized knowledge.

If a web search is deemed necessary, Claude will formulate a search query, retrieve relevant results, analyze the information, and then provide an answer complete with citations.

Refined Search and Customization Options

Claude is capable of refining its search queries and performing multiple searches. Earlier results are used to inform and improve subsequent searches.

Developers have the flexibility to customize this behavior. They can also specify domains that Claude is permitted to search, as well as those it should avoid.

Furthermore, organizations can control web search usage at a broader level, either allowing or prohibiting it entirely, according to Anthropic.

Pricing and Model Compatibility

Pricing for the web search API begins at $10 for every 1,000 searches conducted.

The search functionality is compatible with Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet, the newer Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku models.

Web Search for Claude Code

In related developments, Anthropic is also integrating web search capabilities into Claude Code. This tool assists developers by leveraging Claude to complete various coding tasks.

With web search enabled, Claude Code can access current API documentation, technical articles, and other resources related to development tools and libraries.

It’s important to note that Claude Code currently remains in beta as a research preview.
