Accelerator Gives Voting Rights to Scientist Founders

SciFounders Offers Voting Rights to Scientist Founders
SciFounders, a recently established accelerator program and fund with $6 million in initial investment, is introducing a novel approach for the scientist founders it supports. The organization intends to grant select funded teams the voting rights typically associated with their investment.
A Shift in Venture Capital Dynamics
This decision reflects current trends within the venture capital landscape. While VCs have historically held significant power, entrepreneurs have recently enjoyed a more favorable position. This has led to VCs actively seeking to attract founders through various means, including expanding their presence and accelerating funding processes.
Addressing the Needs of Scientist Entrepreneurs
Matt Krisiloff, co-founder of SciFounders, emphasizes that this initiative stems from a deeper consideration. The program was created to address the increasing number of PhD holders facing limited opportunities within academia.
Krisiloff, who also leads the biotech company Conception focused on stem cell research, expresses concern over biotech founders frequently relinquishing control of their companies.
Capital Intensity and Founder Dilution
This often occurs due to the substantial capital requirements of these ventures. Starting a software company can be achieved with minimal pre-seed funding, but a life science company typically requires several million dollars to initiate operations. This disparity can quickly lead to founder ownership and influence being diluted.
Empowering Scientist Leadership
SciFounders aims to empower scientists with greater leverage. Krisiloff states that the organization is willing to facilitate this, even if it means relinquishing some of its own control. He envisions a future where scientist founders, like their counterparts in the software industry – such as the Collison brothers at Stripe or the founders of Airbnb – maintain leadership positions within their companies.
SciFounders’ Current Impact and Future Goals
To date, SciFounders has invested $400,000 and provided mentorship to seven companies, acquiring a 10% stake in each. The organization acknowledges its limited capacity for widespread impact.
Anticipating Industry Response
Krisiloff anticipates potential resistance from limited partners regarding VCs relinquishing voting rights, a key tool for influencing corporate decisions. However, he believes that change must begin somewhere.
Strong Interest from the Academic Community
SciFounders has already garnered significant interest by offering enhanced guidance to academics. Despite currently working with only seven teams – providing active support for up to a year due to the extended iteration cycles common in scientific research – the program has received over 1,000 applications following a simple announcement on Twitter.
The SciFounders Team
In addition to Krisiloff, SciFounders was co-founded by Alexander Schubert, a molecular biologist formerly a postdoctoral fellow at Genentech, and Lucas Harrington, co-founder and chief scientific officer of Mammoth Biosciences.
Notable Connections
Lucas Harrington’s co-founders include Jennifer Doudna, a co-inventor of CRISPR-Cas genome editing technology and a 2020 Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry, alongside Emmanuelle Charpentier.
