Amazon Opens $1.5 Billion Air Cargo Hub in Kentucky
Amazon’s new $1.5 billion air cargo facility in Northern Kentucky commenced operations on Wednesday. This represents the latest strategic move by the e-commerce leader to integrate a network of 40 locations and exert comprehensive control over the delivery process.
As consumer expectations for rapid and convenient service continue to rise, Amazon is focused on optimizing its logistics capabilities. The new Amazon Air Hub, situated at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, will function as the core of its U.S. cargo network.
Hub Development and Capacity
Over four years were dedicated to the planning and construction of this pivotal facility. Amazon anticipates the U.S. hub will ultimately manage twelve flights daily.
The hub is designed to process millions of packages on a weekly basis, significantly enhancing Amazon’s delivery throughput.
Facility Details
The complex encompasses an 800,000-square-foot sortation building. It is located on a sprawling 600-acre campus.
The campus includes seven buildings, a dedicated aircraft parking ramp, and a multistory parking structure for vehicles.
Workforce and Technology
It is projected that over 2,000 individuals will be employed at the air hub. This will contribute significantly to the local economy.
Robotics technology will play a crucial role in hub operations. Specifically, robotic arms will be utilized for package movement and sorting.
Mobile drive units will also be deployed to efficiently transport packages throughout the building.
Expansion of Amazon Air Network
Amazon Air was initially launched in 2016 and has since expanded to include a network of over 40 locations globally.
In 2023, Amazon Air established its European air hub at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport. This 215,000-square-foot facility currently operates two Amazon-branded Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Regional Hubs and Future Plans
Amazon Air currently maintains regional air hubs at airports in Texas, Puerto Rico, and Florida.
Further expansion is planned for the San Bernardino International Airport in California, with completion targeted for 2021.
