Amazon Same-Day Grocery Delivery Now Available in 2,300 Cities

Amazon Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery
Amazon announced on Wednesday a significant expansion of its Same-Day Delivery service, now reaching customers in more than 2,300 U.S. cities and towns. Further expansion to even more locations is planned for 2026.
New Capabilities and Competitive Landscape
The ability to order perishable groceries through Same-Day Delivery was initially introduced in August. This move positions Amazon to more directly challenge competitors like Instacart and Walmart+ within the rapidly growing quick-commerce sector.
What Customers Are Ordering
Since its inception, customers have been utilizing the service to purchase a diverse range of items. This includes fresh produce, dairy products, meats, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods, alongside traditional Amazon offerings like electronics and books.
Everyday household necessities, such as paper towels and toothpaste, are also frequently ordered through this convenient delivery option.
Quality Control and Temperature Management
Amazon emphasizes its commitment to quality. A “specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network” is utilized to ensure the integrity of perishable items during transit.
Each order undergoes a rigorous six-point quality inspection both upon arrival at the fulfillment center and before dispatch for delivery. Temperature-sensitive products are consistently transported in insulated bags.
Popular Grocery Items
Currently, fresh groceries account for nine of the ten most frequently ordered items via fast delivery.
The current bestsellers include bananas, Haas avocados, strawberries, honeycrisp apples, limes, blueberries, blackberries, organic bananas, navel oranges, and even bathroom tissues.
Growth and Customer Behavior
Amazon reports a remarkable 30-fold increase in perishable grocery sales since January. Customers who include fresh groceries in their Same-Day Delivery orders demonstrate a shopping frequency approximately double that of those who do not.
Pricing and Membership Benefits
Prime members enjoy free Same-Day Delivery on orders exceeding $25. A $2.99 fee applies for orders below this threshold.
Customers without a Prime membership can access the service for a flat fee of $12.99, irrespective of order size.
Expanded Selection
Since August, Amazon has increased its selection of perishable groceries available for Same-Day Delivery by over 30%.
This expansion includes the addition of thousands of popular items sourced directly from Whole Foods Market.
