Amazon Music Unlimited Adds Spatial Audio for All Headphones

Amazon Music Expands Spatial Audio Availability
Amazon has announced that Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers can now experience spatial audio streaming with their existing headphones, directly through the Android and iOS applications.
Currently, the service supports two distinct spatial audio formats: Sony’s 360 Reality Audio and Dolby Atmos.
Initial Spatial Audio Introduction and Expansion
Spatial audio was initially introduced by Amazon in 2019, but its functionality was restricted to a limited selection of devices. This recent update broadens compatibility to encompass virtually any headphone owned by a user.
According to Steve Boom, Vice President of Amazon Music, the company’s goal is to make the highest possible audio quality standard for music streaming. This is achieved by providing spatial audio access without requiring specialized equipment or upgrades.
Streaming Options and Compatible Devices
Users can now also stream spatial audio utilizing Alexa Cast on a range of devices, including the Echo Studio.
Additional devices offering support for 360 Reality Audio via Alexa Cast include Sony’s SRS-RA5000 and SRS-RA3000 wireless speakers, as well as home theater systems like the HT-A9, HT-A7000, and HT-A5000.
Enhanced Audio Quality for Subscribers
Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers with Individual, Family, or Student plans will automatically gain access to both HD and Ultra HD music at no additional cost.
Subscription Costs
Individual plans for Amazon Music Unlimited are priced at $7.99 per month for Prime members and $9.99 per month for other Amazon customers.
The Family Plan allows streaming on up to six devices for $14.99 monthly.
Competition in the Spatial Audio Market
Amazon Music is not alone in adopting spatial audio; Apple Music launched spatial audio support for iOS in June and for Android in July.
In response to this competition, Spotify announced plans earlier this year to introduce a premium subscription tier, “Spotify HiFi,” which will offer lossless audio capabilities.
Spatial Audio Beyond Music Streaming
The application of spatial audio extends beyond music streaming platforms.
Clubhouse recently integrated spatial audio for Android last month, and Netflix has announced the upcoming availability of spatial audio within its iPhone and iPad applications.
