Amazon One Medical Expands Virtual Care for Children

Amazon One Medical, the primary care provider acquired by Amazon in 2022, has announced the rollout of a new virtual healthcare option. This service is specifically designed for children between the ages of 2 and 11.

The new offering allows parents to access care on a pay-per-visit basis, without the need for health insurance or a One Medical membership.

Service Details and Pricing

Message-based consultations are available starting at $29, while video appointments are priced at $49.

This service is intended to address common childhood ailments such as pink eye, head lice, and a variety of skin conditions.

Conditions Treated

  • Eczema
  • Bug bites
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Fungal rashes
  • And more than 10 other skin-related issues

Furthermore, the service facilitates renewals for prescriptions like EpiPens and asthma medications.

Adult Services and Market Context

Amazon initially introduced a similar pay-per-visit virtual healthcare service for adults earlier in 2024.

This expansion for children occurs as other major players in the retail health space, including Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart, are reducing the scope of their services.

Recent Innovations at One Medical Clinics

Last week, Amazon One Medical began deploying prescription vending machines at its clinics, starting with locations in Los Angeles.

These kiosks stock frequently prescribed medications, encompassing antibiotics, inhalers, and blood pressure treatments.

Potential Disruption to Traditional Pharmacies

The introduction of these kiosks has the potential to significantly impact traditional brick-and-mortar pharmacies, which are already facing challenges.

Recent examples include Rite Aid’s complete store closure and CVS closing over 1,000 locations since 2021, alongside Walgreens’ closure of 500 stores in the past year.

Amazon’s Growing Healthcare Footprint

The launch of this new pediatric service represents the latest step in Amazon’s ongoing expansion within the healthcare industry.

In 2018, Amazon acquired online pharmacy PillPack for $750 million, subsequently launching Amazon Pharmacy in 2020.

The 2022 acquisition of One Medical for $3.9 billion further solidified Amazon’s position in the healthcare market.

According to Natasha Bhuyan, MD, family physician and national medical director for Amazon One Medical, the service is designed to complement, not replace, a child’s existing relationship with their pediatrician.

It aims to provide a convenient solution for parents facing time-sensitive concerns.
