Amazon Nova Premier: Launch of Most Capable AI Model

Amazon Launches Nova Premier AI Model
Amazon unveiled its latest AI model, Nova Premier, on Wednesday. The company positions this as the most powerful model within the Nova family to date.
Nova Premier Capabilities
Nova Premier is a multimodal AI, capable of processing text, images, and videos. However, it currently does not support audio input.
The model is now accessible through Amazon Bedrock, the company’s platform designed for AI model development. Amazon asserts that Nova Premier is particularly adept at handling intricate tasks.
These complex tasks necessitate a thorough grasp of context, involve multiple planning stages, and demand precise execution utilizing various tools and data sources.
Nova Model Lineup Expansion
Amazon initially introduced the Nova model series in December during the annual AWS re:Invent conference.
Since then, the company has progressively expanded the Nova collection. Additions include models for generating images and videos, alongside releases focused on audio understanding and agentic task performance.
Performance Benchmarks
Nova Premier boasts a substantial context length of 1 million tokens. This allows it to analyze approximately 750,000 words in a single processing instance.
While powerful, Premier’s performance on certain benchmarks trails behind leading models from competitors like Google. Specifically, it lags behind Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro on the SWE-Bench Verified coding test.
Furthermore, Premier demonstrates weaker results on benchmarks evaluating math and science knowledge, such as GPQA Diamond and AIME 2025.
Areas of Strength
Amazon’s internal benchmarking reveals strong performance for Premier in areas of knowledge retrieval and visual understanding. The model excels on tests like SimpleQA and MMMU.
Pricing Details
Within Amazon Bedrock, Nova Premier is priced at $2.50 per 1 million tokens processed as input. Generating output with the model costs $12.50 per 1 million tokens.
This pricing structure is comparable to that of Gemini 2.5 Pro, which is priced at $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
Model Characteristics
It’s important to note that Premier is not designed as a “reasoning” model. Unlike models such as OpenAI’s o4-mini and DeepSeek’s R1, it does not employ extended processing time or computational resources for careful consideration and fact-checking of responses.
Ideal Use Case
Amazon recommends Nova Premier for “teaching” smaller models through a process called distillation. This involves transferring Premier’s capabilities to a more efficient and faster model tailored for a specific application.
Amazon’s AI Strategy
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly central to Amazon’s overall growth strategy.
CEO Andy Jassy recently stated that the company is developing over 1,000 generative AI applications. Amazon’s AI revenue is experiencing “triple-digit” year-over-year growth and currently represents a “multi-billion-dollar annual revenue run rate.”
