Amazon Expands Future Engineer Program to India

Amazon is broadening the reach of its computer science initiative, Future Engineer, to include India. This makes India the fifth global market to benefit from this comprehensive, childhood-to-career program.

Educational Resources and Support

The company announced during a virtual event on Tuesday its commitment to providing a range of educational resources. These include scholarships, internships, and mentorship opportunities designed to teach computer science principles to students in India.

The curriculum will cover key areas within computer science, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Resources will also be available to support educators.

Focus on Underserved Communities

Amazon’s Future Engineer program collaborates with organizations like Code.org. This partnership aims to deliver computer science education to children and young adults from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds.

The program’s primary focus is on students currently in grades six through twelve.

Addressing Barriers to Access

Despite a substantial number of students – approximately one million – enrolling in computer science engineering courses annually in India, participation from underserved communities remains limited.

Several factors contribute to this disparity. These include a lack of awareness regarding CS career paths, a shortage of relatable role models, and difficulties accessing curriculum materials in appropriate languages.

Furthermore, government schools often face constraints in resources dedicated to computer science education.

Projected Impact and Reach

Amazon anticipates that Future Engineer, specifically tailored for the Indian educational landscape and available in multiple regional languages, will reach over 100,000 students.

This impact is expected within the first year, across more than 900 government schools spanning seven states.

Previous Announcements

Reports from TechCrunch in December indicated Amazon’s plans to launch this program within the Indian market.

Statements from Amazon Leadership

Amit Agarwal, Global Senior VP and Country Head at Amazon India, expressed enthusiasm about bringing Future Engineer to India. He emphasized the importance of equal access to quality computer science education for all young people, regardless of their background.

“We aim to deliver the CS curriculum in languages students are comfortable with,” Agarwal stated. “Our goal is to empower them with the necessary skills and tools to broaden their career horizons.”

Amazon hopes to foster confidence and skill development, enabling students to become innovative technology creators and contribute to a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Amazon’s Investment in Indian Education

The American e-commerce giant has already invested over $6.5 billion in India. It has been actively exploring opportunities within the Indian education sector for several years.

Two years ago, Amazon launched JEE Ready, an application designed to assist students preparing for entrance exams to India’s leading technology institutions.

JEE Ready has since been rebranded as Amazon Academy and provides free online classes alongside performance analysis through mock tests.
