Freevee Shut Down: Amazon to Discontinue Free Streaming App

Amazon to Discontinue Stand-Alone Freevee Application
According to a notification delivered to users within the application itself, Amazon is planning to cease operation of its independent Freevee app in August.
Viewers of the ad-supported streaming service, which is offered at no cost, are being directed to access Freevee programming through the Prime Video platform.
Transition to Prime Video
“Prime Video now serves as the sole destination for Freevee’s TV series, films, and Live TV broadcasts,” the in-app message communicates.
“The Freevee application will remain functional until August 2025. Continue enjoying your preferred Free Originals, alongside our extensive collection of popular movies, shows, and live television, all on Prime Video – completely free, without the need for a subscription.”
Users are encouraged to download the Prime Video application and log in using their existing Amazon account to begin.
Confirmation of Service Integration
This development aligns with Amazon’s announcement made in November 2024, confirming the planned sunsetting of the service and its subsequent integration into Prime Video.
At that time, Amazon stated its intention to discontinue the Freevee brand.
Content Availability
The company clarified that the content offering would remain unchanged for Prime members.
A substantial selection of free streaming content will continue to be available to non-Prime members, encompassing select Amazon MGM Studios Originals, a diverse range of licensed films and series, and a comprehensive library of FAST Channels – all accessible via Prime Video.
Strategic Consolidation
Amazon’s decision to discontinue the separate service likely represents a strategic effort to streamline its offerings and consolidate content onto a unified platform.
By centralizing its streaming initiatives around Prime Video, the company is moving away from maintaining two distinct services.
Service History and Reach
Initially launched in 2019, Freevee has been available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria.
The service was originally known as “IMDb TV” before undergoing a rebranding to Freevee in 2022.
Popular Freevee Originals
Notable original series featured on Freevee include the Emmy-nominated reality comedy “Jury Duty,” the crime drama “Bosch: Legacy,” and the soap opera “Neighbours.”
These programs are now accessible on Prime Video within the “Watch for Free” section.
Streaming Landscape
This announcement follows a recent Nielsen report indicating that streaming services surpassed both cable and broadcast television in total viewership within the U.S. during May.
Free streaming services were identified as a significant contributor to the overall growth of streaming.
The report revealed that Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Tubi collectively accounted for 5.7% of total television viewing in May.
