Amazon to Cease Android Appstore Operations

Amazon has announced the forthcoming closure of its app store for Android devices, effective August 20th of this year. Developers have been notified that submissions of new applications will no longer be accepted.

Discontinuation of Amazon Coins

Alongside the app store, Amazon will also be phasing out its Amazon Coins digital currency. This currency was previously utilized for the purchase of applications and games within the Amazon Appstore.

The official announcement, published on a support page, confirms that access to the Amazon Appstore on Android devices will be terminated on August 20, 2025. The Amazon Coins program will also be discontinued on the same date.

Refunds for Existing Coins

Users who possess Amazon Coins as of August 20th will receive a full refund for their remaining balance. Amazon clarified that the app store saw limited usage outside of its own ecosystem of devices.

A company representative stated that the decision to discontinue the Android app store is a strategic one. Efforts will now be concentrated on enhancing the Appstore experience specifically on Amazon’s own devices, where the vast majority of customers currently utilize it.

Continued Functionality on Amazon Devices

The Amazon Appstore will remain operational on Amazon’s proprietary devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablet. This ensures continued service for users within the Amazon hardware ecosystem.

Past Security Concerns

In 2023, security investigations conducted by McAfee Labs revealed an instance of malware being distributed through an application on the Amazon Appstore. The malicious application was disguised as a legitimate health tool.

A Long-Standing Effort to Compete

Since 2011, Amazon has been attempting to establish itself as a competitor to Google in the app store market, aiming to create an alternative ecosystem. The app store also played a role in the ultimately unsuccessful Fire Phone project.

Windows Appstore Support Also Ending

Previously, Amazon announced the termination of support for its app store on Windows, which allowed for the running of Android applications. This change took effect on March 5, 2025, following the program’s launch in 2021.
