Amazon Launches At-Home COVID-19 Test Kits

This morning, Amazon announced the commencement of sales for its own branded COVID-19 at-home tests, made available to customers across the U.S. The test is offered at a retail price of $39.99 through the Amazon.com website.

Access to the test is granted to all U.S. customers without the need for a prescription. The COVID-19 PCR collection kit is delivered directly to the customer’s residence via Amazon Prime.

The kit contains all necessary components for performing a nasal swab sample collection. Following collection, the sample tube, containing the swab, is returned to Amazon using the provided return packaging.

Rapid Result Delivery

Amazon states that test results will be available within 24 hours of the sample’s arrival at their laboratory. This quick turnaround time aims to provide timely information to customers.

The processing of these kits will be conducted by Amazon’s dedicated in-house laboratory. This facility was established during the pandemic to support COVID-19 testing for the company’s essential workforce.

To date, Amazon’s U.S. and U.K. laboratories have processed millions of tests from over 750,000 employees. Now, the company is extending the lab’s capabilities to serve its broader customer base.

Utilizing PT-PCR Technology

Amazon is employing the PT-PCR testing method, known for its enhanced accuracy. It’s important to note that this method requires laboratory processing, meaning results aren't immediate.

These kits have received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, confirming their compliance with necessary standards.

Kit Contents and Return Process

The Amazon COVID-19 Test Collection Kit DTC, as listed on Amazon.com, includes a nasal swab, a collection tube pre-filled with saline solution, a plastic biohazard bag with an absorbent material, and a prepaid return shipping box.

Return shipping is facilitated by UPS at no extra cost to the customer. Samples are sent to Amazon’s CLIA-certified and CAP accredited laboratory located in Hebron, Kentucky.

Accessing Results and Travel Compliance

Instructions for accessing your results are provided and are available through Amazon’s secure website, AmazonDx.com. Access to necessary documentation for testing verification is also included.

Amazon confirms these tests fulfill testing requirements for domestic travel within the U.S. (excluding Hawaii) and for entry into numerous international destinations.

Furthermore, the cost of the kit is eligible for reimbursement through Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).

He added that the kit delivers accurate and timely results, empowering customers to confidently resume travel, work, education, and everyday activities.
