Amazon revealed on Wednesday the rollout of a novel AI-powered capability for its Fire TV platform. This feature enables users to navigate directly to particular moments within movies on Prime Video through simple voice descriptions provided to Alexa+.

According to Amazon’s official blog post, the primary objective of Fire TV is to expedite access to desired content. This new, AI-driven functionality directly supports that goal. Viewers can now describe a scene as they would in a casual conversation, and Alexa+ will instantly transport them to that precise point in the film, eliminating the need for manual searching.

How the Feature Works

Users can trigger the scene jump by detailing elements such as the names of actors or characters, or by referencing a recognizable line of dialogue.

For instance, a user might request, “Jump to the scene in Mamma Mia where Sophie performs ‘Honey Honey’” or “Jump to the scene featuring Deloris Jordan’s quote, ‘a shoe is just a shoe until my son steps into it.’”

Further examples of voice commands include: “Jump to the scene where John McClane says ‘come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs’” and “Jump to the card scene in Love Actually.”

Underlying Technology

Alexa+ is capable of identifying the intended movie even without explicit mention of its title. It then employs both visual analysis and movie captioning to comprehend the characters, storyline, and events unfolding within each scene, pinpointing the requested moment with accuracy.

This new feature is constructed upon Amazon Bedrock, the company’s platform offering access to a range of generative AI models from both Amazon and its partners via an API. The system utilizes multiple large language models, including Amazon Nova and Anthropic Claude.

Availability and Future Expansion

Currently, the feature supports a vast library of movie titles on Prime Video, encompassing tens of thousands of pre-indexed scenes. Amazon intends to continually expand this catalog, adding more films and scenes, and eventually extending the functionality to encompass television shows.

It is important to note that access to this feature is contingent upon the movie being included with a Prime membership, or having been purchased or rented through Prime Video.
