Amazon Removes "Inclusion and Diversity" References from SEC Filing
Amazon has joined other technology firms in omitting mentions of “inclusion and diversity” from its most recent 10-K report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Specifically, the company’s workplace diversity and inclusion initiatives are no longer highlighted in the annual filing.
Changes in the 10-K Report
The 2023 10-K form contained a statement emphasizing the company’s commitment to being Earth’s best employer, citing investment, innovation, inclusion and diversity, safety, and employee engagement as key areas of focus for talent acquisition and development.
However, the 2024 filing significantly shortened this statement to simply, “We strive to be Earth’s best employer.”
Mentions of “diversity” were limited to discussions of product categories, while references to “inclusion” appeared only in the context of stock award considerations.
Company Response and Continued Commitment
A representative for Amazon declined to provide a direct comment on the change.
They did direct attention to the company’s website, which continues to articulate Amazon’s dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment.
Broader Trend in the Tech Industry
Google was previously reported by TechCrunch to have also removed diversity-related mentions from its latest 10-K filing, in comparison to the previous year’s report.
This shift follows similar actions taken by Meta, and now Google, as Amazon has announced a curtailment of certain DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs.
The company informed its workforce that existing initiatives would be reviewed, with some programs being phased out.
Increased Scrutiny of DEI Programs
DEI initiatives have faced growing criticism in recent times, prompting legal challenges from conservative organizations.
The Trump administration has also expressed opposition to DEI, enacting a ban on such programs within the federal government.
Department of Justice Investigation
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has instructed the Department of Justice to investigate and penalize illegal DEI programs and activities within private sector companies receiving federal funding.
This report has been updated to include a statement from an Amazon spokesperson.
