Amazon Rivian Van Deliveries: Testing Begins

Amazon Initiates Electric Van Deliveries with Rivian
Amazon has commenced delivering packages to customers in Los Angeles utilizing electric vans that were both designed and manufactured by Rivian.
Climate Pledge and Production Timeline
These electric vans are a key component of Amazon’s commitment to the 2040 Climate Pledge. However, full-scale series production isn't anticipated until later this year, as communicated by the company in a recent update.
Amazon has not disclosed the precise number of electric vans currently operating within the test program.
Rigorous Testing and Refinement
The customer deliveries represent an ongoing phase of testing collaboratively undertaken by Amazon and Rivian. This testing is designed to evaluate vehicle performance, safety, and durability across diverse climates and geographical locations.
Initial road tests began over four months ago. The vehicles currently in use were assembled at Rivian’s production facility in Plymouth, Michigan, and possess a driving range of up to 150 miles on a single charge.
Future Expansion and Infrastructure
Rivian engineers will continue to refine the vans in preparation for production at the company’s Normal, Illinois factory.
In the interim, these electric vehicles are expected to appear on delivery routes in as many as 15 additional cities throughout 2021.
Amazon ultimately intends to deploy a fleet of at least 100,000 electric vans – the total quantity ordered from Rivian – over the coming years.
Preparation for Fleet Integration
Testing and development of the vehicles began four months before customer deliveries started. Alongside vehicle testing, Amazon is actively modifying its facilities to support the new electric fleet.
Thousands of electric vehicle charging stations have already been installed at Amazon’s delivery stations throughout North America and Europe.
Positive Reception and Program Momentum
“We’re loving the enthusiasm from customers so far–from the photos we see online to the car fans who stop our drivers for a first-hand look at the vehicle,” stated Ross Rachey, Director of Amazon’s Global Fleet and Products.
“From what we’ve seen, this is one of the fastest modern commercial electrification programs, and we’re incredibly proud of that.”
Design and Features
The exterior design of the Rivian-built electric vans shares similarities with current gasoline-powered delivery vehicles.
However, the electric vans feature more rounded edges and a generally more streamlined aesthetic.
Advanced Technology and Interior Enhancements
The significant advancements lie within the electric architecture and the custom features integrated into the vans.
- These include highway driving and traffic assist functionalities.
- Exterior cameras provide a 360-degree view for the driver via a digital display.
- The cabin offers increased floor space for easier driver access.
- Surround tail lights enhance braking visibility.
- A three-level shelving system and a bulkhead cargo compartment are included.
Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant is also fully integrated into the vehicle’s system.
