AllTrails Launches AI-Powered Smart Routes with New Membership

AllTrails Launches “Peak” Premium Membership with AI Features
AllTrails, recognized as the 2023 iPhone App of the Year, is introducing a new premium subscription tier named “Peak.” This upgraded membership offers an enhanced suite of features for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Peak subscription is priced at $80 annually and incorporates AI-driven tools. These tools are designed to create personalized routes and deliver real-time insights into trail conditions.
New Features Included in AllTrails Peak
- AI-Powered Route Building: Users can construct custom trails from scratch or modify existing ones.
- Real-Time Trail Condition Forecasts: Access to temperature, precipitation, and snow depth information.
- Trail Traffic Heatmaps: Visualize trail usage to avoid crowds or find areas with more activity.
- Outdoor Lens: Identify trees, plants, and flowers using your phone’s camera.
Initial rollout of the Peak membership will occur over the coming weeks to a select group of members. Global availability is scheduled for June, with early access sign-ups available on the AllTrails website.
Growth and Competition
AllTrails experienced significant growth in 2021, securing $150 million in funding. This surge coincided with a renewed interest in outdoor activities during the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns.
However, the company now faces competition from Apple. Apple added topographic map support to Apple Maps, including trailheads, contour lines, and elevation data. Further enhancements, such as offline maps and national park exploration tools, followed.
The introduction of Peak can be interpreted as AllTrails’ response to this competitive pressure, focusing on features that appeal to its most dedicated users.
The AI-powered route building feature within Peak allows users to tailor trails to their preferences. Trails can be modified to be shorter, less challenging, or more visually appealing.
The new trail condition forecasts function much like a dedicated weather application integrated directly within AllTrails. Alerts regarding air quality and mosquito activity will also be provided.
Future updates will incorporate data on terrain and ground conditions, such as pavement, gravel, and mud.
The heatmap feature provides valuable information regarding trail congestion. Hikers and bikers can utilize this data to select trails based on their preference for solitude or safety in numbers.
This functionality leverages data from AllTrails’ extensive user base, mirroring the approach used by Google Maps to predict venue busy times.
This summer, Peak members will have access to the Outdoor Lens. This feature enables instant identification of plants and trees, with the ability to log findings within the app.
The company plans to expand the identification capabilities of the Lens over time.
Updates to Existing Memberships
Alongside the launch of Peak, AllTrails is also implementing updates to its Base and Plus memberships.
The Base membership remains free and provides access to trail maps, community reviews, and navigation tools. Plus adds offline access, wrong-turn alerts, 3D previews, and live activity sharing.
AllTrails currently boasts over 80 million registered users across all membership tiers.
Both Base and Plus members will receive the new Points of Interest feature, adding over 500,000 mapped viewpoints, landmarks, and trail amenities. Plus subscribers will also benefit from Offline Area, allowing customized offline map downloads with high-resolution details.
