Airbyte Raises $26M Series A for Open-Source Data Connector Platform

Addressing the Data Movement Challenge with Airbyte

A significant hurdle for many organizations today lies not in locating pertinent data, but in effectively transferring it to the locations where it’s required. Airbyte emerges as a solution, being a nascent startup focused on developing an open-source data integration platform designed to tackle this very issue.

The company recently announced a $26 million Series A funding round, following closely on the heels of a $5.2 million seed round secured just months prior.

Investment Details and Platform Overview

Benchmark spearheaded the latest investment, with participation from 8VC, Accel, SV Angel, Y Combinator, and a number of prominent figures within the technology sector.

To date, Airbyte has amassed over $31 million in funding, all received within the current year.

According to Michel Tricot, co-founder and CEO of Airbyte, the core objective is to create an open-source platform that facilitates the movement of data from any source – be it a database, file, or API – to a desired destination, such as a data warehouse or data lake.

This involves the creation of connectors for diverse data types. The company provides both the open-source platform itself and a Software Development Kit (SDK) to enable connector development.

Furthermore, they actively encourage community contributions of new connectors, supplementing their own development efforts.

Rapid Development and Community Growth

The startup is experiencing a period of accelerated progress. Alongside the funding, they launched their Connected Development Kit (CDK) earlier this month.

John Lafleur, co-founder, explained that the CDK allows for the construction of a custom connector in approximately two hours, a substantial reduction from the previous timeframe of two to three days.

Currently, the community has contributed around 20% of the platform’s 70 connectors, but the founders anticipate this proportion will increase as the CDK gains wider adoption.

Future Plans and Community Focus

Founded just last year, Airbyte intends to dedicate this year to expanding its rapidly growing community, which currently comprises 1,200 members and 500 active users.

The long-term strategy involves the development of a hosted version of the platform, which will be offered on a subscription basis, while simultaneously continuing to enhance the open-source project.

Benchmark’s Perspective

Chetan Puttagunta, General Partner at Benchmark and leading today’s investment, highlights Benchmark’s extensive history of investing in open-source ventures.

This includes early investments in companies like Red Hat, Elastic, MongoDB, and Acquia.

Puttagunta stated that Benchmark initiated contact with Airbyte after observing significant developer engagement within its community in a short period.

“We began to notice Airbyte gaining traction across the developer community, quickly establishing itself as the preferred method for data integration,” he noted, emphasizing the remarkable achievement for a company in its early stages.

Team Expansion and Commitment to Diversity

This rapid expansion has resulted in a doubling of the company’s workforce to 14 employees.

Demonstrating a commitment to diversity and inclusion, the founders have authored a comprehensive company handbook that includes detailed definitions and objectives related to these principles – a practice uncommon for startups at this stage.

Tricot emphasized their ongoing dedication to improving diversity, inclusion, and belonging, viewing it as a continuous process with ample room for improvement.
