Airbnb to House Afghan Refugees - New Program Details

Airbnb Expands Support for Afghan Refugees

On Thursday, Airbnb declared that individuals possessing available lodging can register to offer accommodation to Afghan refugees. This new program is designed to expand upon the company's original pledge to furnish complimentary short-term housing for 20,000 Afghan refugees.

Providing Housing and Financial Assistance

Airbnb states that both current hosts on the platform and other interested parties can register to provide either free or reduced-rate accommodations to Afghan refugees via a dedicated website for emergency housing. All fees associated with stays for refugees will be waived by Airbnb.

For those unable to offer physical space, Airbnb suggests contributing financially to support housing initiatives for Afghan refugees. Donations will directly aid in providing shelter during this crisis.

Initial Commitment and Funding

Previously, on Tuesday, Airbnb announced its initial commitment to house 20,000 Afghan refugees. The company will bear the expenses for this housing.

Funding will be sourced from contributions made to its nonprofit arm, Airbnb.org, and a specifically designated Refugee Fund established within that organization. Personal contributions from Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky will also be utilized.

Overwhelming Community Response

“Following the initial announcement, we’ve witnessed substantial interest from individuals both within and outside the Airbnb community, all seeking avenues to support the work of Airbnb and Airbnb.org with partner organizations in assisting Afghan refugees,” the company communicated in an official statement.

“Many have expressed a willingness to offer their properties at no cost. The level of support has been extraordinary, and today we are detailing further how individuals can contribute to our expanded efforts to address the unprecedented demand for temporary emergency housing for those arriving from Afghanistan.”

Collaboration with Government Entities

Airbnb.org and Airbnb are also collaborating with the U.S. federal government, as well as state and local governments, that have indicated a willingness to receive refugees. This collaboration aims to facilitate the provision of necessary accommodations.

Global Refugee Crisis

This housing initiative arrives as tens of thousands of individuals attempt to leave Afghanistan. Companies and governments are experiencing mounting pressure to assist refugees escaping the ongoing crisis.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, there are currently almost 2.5 million registered refugees originating from Afghanistan.
