AI Startup Character AI: Testing Games on the Web

Character AI Introduces Games to Boost User Engagement
Character AI, a company specializing in AI-powered character interactions, is currently evaluating the integration of games within its desktop and mobile web applications. This initiative aims to enhance user engagement and platform activity.
Game Availability
Access to these games is initially limited to Character AI’s subscription-based users, alongside a select group of individuals utilizing the free service tier. The company has launched two initial game offerings: Speakeasy and War of Words.
Users granted access can locate a new controller icon within their ongoing chats with any character on the browser interface. Selecting this icon initiates gameplay with the chosen character. A prompt appears, suggesting a new chat be started to preserve existing conversation history.
Gameplay Details
Speakeasy challenges players to elicit a specific word from the chatbot while avoiding the use of a predetermined list of prohibited terms. For example, a player might attempt to prompt the bot to say “croissant” without employing words such as pastry, butter, bake, French, or flaky.
War of Words presents a dueling scenario where users compete against the character, with an AI-powered referee determining the victor of each round over a total of five rounds.
Strategic Rationale
Character AI views this game integration as a means of enriching the user experience and providing increased entertainment value.
A company spokesperson explained to TechCrunch, “Our objective as an AI entertainment provider is to continually discover methods for making the Character AI experience more enjoyable and captivating. We are presently testing a feature that enables gameplay with your preferred Characters, all while maintaining the immersive experience users have come to appreciate.”
While users have previously created their own text-based games, such as the Space Adventure Game, the company is now focused on developing and offering its own dedicated game experiences.
Recent Company Developments
Character AI has experienced leadership transitions, with co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas departing to join Google. Subsequently, a former YouTube executive was appointed as chief product officer, and Dominic Perella, previously the company’s general counsel, assumed the role of interim CEO.
In December, Perella articulated to TechCrunch that Character AI is positioning itself as an entertainment company. The introduction of games serves to reinforce this strategic direction.
“Unlike companies concentrating on connecting individuals with AI companions, that is not our focus at Character AI. Our aim is to establish a more positive and comprehensive entertainment platform. As we expand and strive towards enabling users to create and share stories, we must prioritize and enhance our safety protocols,” he stated.
Industry Trends and User Engagement
Similar to platforms like YouTube, LinkedIn, and Netflix, Character AI is exploring the use of games to drive user engagement and time spent on the platform. Data from Sensor Tower indicates that Character AI users currently average 98 minutes of daily app usage.
Safety Measures
The company has recently implemented enhanced safety features for teenage users, including more visible disclaimers on AI characters clarifying their non-human nature, following legal challenges. A time-out notification is also triggered after 60 minutes of continuous app use.
