Octopus Deploy Secures $172.5 Million Investment

Octopus Deploy, a company established nearly ten years ago, has experienced substantial growth through self-funding, now serving 25,000 organizations globally. These include prominent entities like Microsoft, NASA, Xero, Disney, and Stack Overflow.

The company recently announced its inaugural external investment. Insight Partners has acquired a minority ownership position in Octopus Deploy for $172.5 million, aiming to facilitate the next phase of expansion for the automated enterprise software deployment provider.

Origins and Early Success

The inception of Octopus Deploy stemmed from founder and CEO Paul Stovell’s observation that while many software development teams successfully implemented continuous integration (CI) servers, achieving complete continuous deployment (CD) proved challenging.

Paul Stovell, alongside his wife Sonia Stovell, who serves as Octopus Deploy’s chief financial officer, initiated the project as a side endeavor in 2011. Remarkably, the company achieved profitability within the following year.

Currently, Octopus Deploy boasts a team of over 100 employees distributed across locations in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Insight Partners and Future Growth

Insight Partners specializes in assisting software companies with scaling their operations. Their ScaleUp Network encompasses companies such as Pluralsight, Shopify, Twitter, Calm, and Qualtrics.

Octopus Deploy intends to utilize this investment to bolster its presence within the enterprise market, with a particular focus on expansion in the United States.

According to Paul Stovell, in correspondence with TechCrunch, Octopus Deploy had previously resisted venture capital offers, consistently declining approaches from VC firms. However, the company’s trajectory suggested that partnering with an investor could be beneficial.

“Our primary customer base is within the enterprise sector, and after careful evaluation, we determined that onboarding an investor with expertise in enterprise go-to-market strategies, company scaling, and a clear vision for our growth over the next 5-10 years was the appropriate course of action,” he stated.

Industry Recognition

Michael Triplett, a managing director at Insight Partners, commented in a press release that Octopus Deploy was frequently recommended by their portfolio companies.

“We consistently heard about Octopus Deploy from our portfolio companies and their customers. Despite operating with a relatively low profile, the company enjoys strong customer loyalty. It’s evident that Octopus Deploy is a leading force in enterprise deployment automation,” he explained.
