Adobe Reader X: Enhanced Security and New Features

Adobe has recently focused on bolstering the security of its primary PDF reader application, culminating in the release of Adobe Reader X.

This updated version incorporates Protected Mode, a security measure that establishes a secure, isolated environment for script execution.

Within this sandbox, scripts can operate without posing a threat to the overall functionality of the program or the user’s computer system.

Collaboration and Malware Mitigation

The development of this feature involved close collaboration with other leading software companies.

These include the teams responsible for Microsoft Office and Google Chrome, who have also implemented similar sandbox technologies.

The primary goal of this security sandbox is to minimize the potential for malware and other malicious software to compromise user devices.

Platform Availability

While Protected Mode is available for Windows users, those utilizing Android and macOS versions of Adobe Reader X will not have access to this feature.

The necessity of heightened security measures on these platforms is still under evaluation.

As Kyle Randolff, an Adobe engineer, explained: "A sandbox is defined by the limitations it imposes on executing code."

He continued, "Software is judged by its utility, and the challenge for sandbox engineers is to balance preventing harmful software with enabling beneficial software to function effectively."

New Features for Android Users

Android users will benefit from several new features, many of which were highly requested.

  • Support for tablet devices.
  • A dedicated Go To Page function.
  • An integrated search capability.
  • The ability to open Portfolios.
  • Password protection for PDF documents.
  • Simplified PDF sharing via email.

Ongoing Security Improvements

Adobe has released seven security updates this year to address vulnerabilities within its Reader application.

It is anticipated that Protected Mode will alleviate some of the workload on the software engineers responsible for maintaining application security.
