Adobe Launches AI Assistants for Express & Photoshop

Adobe Introduces AI Assistants for Enhanced Creativity
Adobe has recently unveiled new artificial intelligence assistants designed to streamline image creation and editing processes within its Express and Photoshop applications.
New Approaches to AI Integration
While many companies integrate AI assistants into sidebars for contextual awareness, Adobe has adopted a unique approach for Express. A dedicated mode has been created, enabling users to generate new images and designs through text prompts.
This new mode allows seamless transitions between AI-powered prompting and the existing editing tools and controls already available in Express.
Photoshop's Sidebar Assistant
The new assistant for Photoshop, currently in closed beta, resides within a sidebar interface. Adobe asserts that this assistant possesses the capability to interpret different layers and facilitate automated object selection and mask creation.
Users can leverage the assistant to automate repetitive tasks, such as background removal or color adjustments, significantly accelerating their workflow.
Rationale Behind Express's Unique Design
According to Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP of generative AI, the decision to implement a distinct mode for the Express AI assistant was driven by the app’s target audience – students and professionals.
The company aims to determine if users can effectively achieve their desired outcomes without needing to revert to the traditional interface.
“We believe this dual-mode approach, offering the advantages of both systems, will render the technology both accessible and controllable,” Costin stated.
Exploring Future AI Capabilities: Project Moonlight
Adobe is also experimenting with “Project Moonlight,” a novel assistant concept. This project focuses on coordinating multiple assistants across various Adobe tools.
Furthermore, it aims to connect to a creator’s social media channels to gain a deeper understanding of their individual style preferences.
Currently in private beta and early development, Project Moonlight represents a forward-looking initiative.
Integration with ChatGPT
The company is investigating a connection between Adobe Express and ChatGPT, utilizing OpenAI’s app integrations API.
This integration would allow users to directly create designs within the ChatGPT environment.
Expanded AI Features for Creative Cloud
Adobe has also announced a new suite of AI features for its Creative Cloud applications.
Photoshop users now have the option to select from third-party models, including Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash and Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 Kontext, for the generative fill feature.
This feature enables the removal of objects or the extension of images with greater flexibility.
AI-Powered Masking in Premiere Pro
An AI-powered object mask is being added to Premiere Pro, Adobe’s video editing application.
This new tool will allow users to easily identify and select objects or individuals within videos, facilitating the application of effects or color adjustments.
