Adobe Photoshop AI: New Image Editing Features

Adobe Enhances Photoshop with New AI Capabilities

Adobe is integrating further AI-driven image editing and enhancement functionalities into Photoshop, leveraging its Firefly models. The company announced today the release of an image upscaling feature, advanced object blending, and a refined object removal tool for Photoshop users.

Generative Upscale for Enhanced Image Resolution

The newly implemented Generative Upscale feature is capable of increasing image resolution up to 8 megapixels. This capability proves particularly valuable for restoring detail in older photographs, preparing images for printing at larger sizes, or adapting visual assets for diverse platforms.

Harmonize: Seamless Object Integration

Earlier in 2024, Adobe previewed Project Perfect Blend, a technology designed to intelligently adjust colors, shadows, and lighting when incorporating new objects into existing images.

This functionality is now being launched under the name Harmonize. It allows users to seamlessly place objects within a scene, eliminate their original backgrounds, and utilize Firefly models to ensure the object’s color, lighting, shadows, and overall visual tone harmonize with the surrounding environment.

Improved Object Removal Tool

Adobe has also introduced an upgraded object removal tool. Previously, the generative fill function, when used for object removal, would analyze the entire scene to fill the vacated space.

This often resulted in undesirable artifacts within the image. The algorithm has been redesigned to concentrate solely on removing the specified object and seamlessly filling the resulting gap with the appropriate background elements.

Demonstration of Enhanced Object Removal

A demonstration witnessed by TechCrunch showcased the improvement. Joel Baer, Adobe’s director for product management at Photoshop, previously encountered issues with an earlier version of the object removal tool.

Attempting to remove a small bowl of pico de gallo from an image resulted in the tool replacing it with an incongruous green blob. The updated version successfully removed the object and replaced it with a natural extension of the background.

Additional Features and User Feedback

Beyond these core enhancements, Adobe is also adding supplementary features to Photoshop. These include improved asset management for shared and organized workspaces. Users now also have the ability to select the specific version of the Firefly model they wish to utilize when employing AI features.

“We engaged with photographers, designers, and content creators to pinpoint workflow bottlenecks and identify areas for improvement,” stated Shambhavi Kadam, senior director of product management for Photoshop, during a briefing.

“These new features are designed to streamline their processes, reduce friction, and automate time-consuming tasks.”

Availability

The Generative Upscale, Harmonize, and improved object-removal features are currently available in beta for Photoshop on both desktop and web platforms. The Harmonize feature is also accessible through an early access program within the new Photoshop iOS application.
